In this atmospheric Southern cozy debut, Madeline Brimley returns to the bookstore she inherited, discovering that small towns hold deadly secrets.

Madeline Brimley left small-town Georgia many years ago to go to college and pursue her dreams on the stage. Her dramatic escapades are many, but success has eluded her, leaving her at loose ends. But then she gets word that not only has her beloved, eccentric Aunt Rose passed, but she's left Madeline her equally eccentric bookstore housed in an old Victorian mansion in the small college town of Enigma. But when she arrives in her beat-up Fiat to claim The Old Juniper Bookstore—and restart her life—Madeline is faced with unexpected challenges. The gazebo in the backyard is set ablaze, and a late-night caller threatens to burn the whole store down if she doesn't leave immediately.

But Madeline Brimley, not one to be intimidated, ignores the threats and soldiers on. Until there's another fire and a murder in the store itself. Now, with a cloud of suspicion falling over her, it's up to Madeline to untangle the skein of secrets and find the killer before she herself is the next victim.

The story keeps you interested and with humor to lighten your mood. You get hints but you don’t know who did it until the end.

Crazy enough to be great.

This book kept my attention throughout the book. Ended up finishing it in one day. Good plot and enjoyable characters.

Wonderful performance

I loved some of the characters especially Gloria! But Madeleine was horrible. The age the character is presented is not what is given. She comes off as a spoiled fresh out of college woman. Instead of someone who has had full life experiences. Her character flip flops a lot and the entitlement is insane is some of this. Gloria and Phil essentially save this story. Some characters are just thrown in there. Its a nice read but with a shut up and get on with it kinda feel. Some parts feel more like filler than really necessary.

Gloria good I'll Father Gloria

I don’t think I’ve ever read or listened to a book where the protagonist did so many stupid things and made so many stupid, inappropriate comments. She undervalued the intelligence of several people from southern Georgia. The narrator mangled the pronunciation of the word deleterious. Someone should have caught that.
