Dual Timeline, Struggle, Perseverance and Connection.

Beautiful piece of historical fiction exploring connections in family, community & friendship while enduring hardship and sacrifice; reminding us that we are connected to our past which also informs the future. I enjoyed the dual timeline and ways in which the author created parallels between ancient China and depression era Manhattan. What may seem like contrasting storylines become interwoven between her two main characters and their loved ones. The narration was nice, easy to listen to & an assist to any of us not familiar with pronunciation of Chinese names and places. However,I thought the voice the narrator gave to some male characters made them sound unintelligent—sort of that “duh” voice. Anyway, it was used for intelligent characters and I got past it. Be sure to go to the very end where the author gives her insights and notes about the historical setting and her use of fiction in a non-fiction setting as well as additional maps, etc.
