A Doxological Reading

The Apostle John is on an island prison. The young Christian religion is facing its first empire-wide persecution under Domitian. Then, while John was in prayer, one like a son of man appeared to him. John is given seven visions. Each vision tells of the conflict between good and evil and how the Word of God conquers the world. Each vision gives a different perspective of the enemy and his forces. And each vision tells of the Lord Jesus Christ, who receives all glory and praise as he rules the world. What is the outcome? The earth is filled with the knowledge of the glory of God, the second coming; the dead are raised, and the wicked are judged and cast into the lake of fire, which is the second death. Just as human history in Genesis began with a wedding, so now human history ends with a wedding. The New Heavens and the New Earth bring about the fullness of the Kingdom of God. And what is the purpose of these seven visions? They comfort the church through the ages with their reminder of how good overcomes evil, a blessing to those who read with understanding, and a reminder that they are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus. Together, we join John in this Revelation of the knowledge of God's sovereign rule.
