Walter Raleigh lived at the edge of ambition.

Raleigh’s dream stretched beyond England.
He promoted the Virginia enterprise, became tied forever to the mystery of Roanoke, challenged Spanish power, and imagined an English empire before England had the machinery to build one. His vision was bold, but it was also flawed. Colonies could not live on speeches, court favour, or patriotic fantasy. They needed supply, discipline, and permanence. Raleigh helped give England the dream of empire, but he could not yet make that dream secure.
Under Elizabeth, his ambition made him useful.
Under James I, it made him dangerous.
Accused of treason, imprisoned in the Tower, and later released for one final desperate expedition to Guiana, Raleigh became trapped between old Elizabethan aggression and a new Stuart desire for peace. His final failure gave the crown the excuse it needed. In 1618, the axe fell.
