In Agatha Award-winner Maddie Day's delightfully spooky Cozy Capers Book Group mystery, it's Halloween, and Cape Cod bike shop owner Mackenzie "Mac" Almeida and her book club must unmask a killer....

Just in time for Halloween, a new costume shop has opened on Main Street in Westham, Massachusetts. Cape Costumers is a cut above the usual seasonal pop-up stores with their flimsy mass-produced outfits and cheap plastic masks, mostly due to co-owner Shelly, a former Broadway costume designer. But when Shelly discovers her elderly boyfriend Enzo—a Broadway star who retired to Westham—dead of unnatural causes, Halloween suddenly gets a lot scarier.

Sleuthing, Mac has found, is a lot like riding a bicycle: once you learn how, you never forget. Far from being spooked, Mac and the members of the Cozy Capers Book Group put down their weekly book selection and put their heads together to see past a bag of tricks and find a malice-making murderer who's hiding in plain sight....

I had preordered the audio version of this book and waited until now (October) to listen to it since it is a Halloween themed mystery featuring my wonderful friends Mac Almeida and the gang.

I was not disappointed in the main and subplots, but felt the book could have been just a tad longer, since one of the important subplots comes to a climax very quickly at the end, and then the book was finished.

The narration is stellar, as always, by Ms. Rachel Dulude. She makes the characters come alive. I especially like how she performs children's and talking bird voices.

I will eagerly await the publishing of more books in this series, because when I start listening to Maddie Day's books, I am instantly transported to her fictional worlds and I bond with the characters.

I very highly recommend this series to any mystery lover, and would suggest starting with book #1: MURDER ON CAPE COD.

Book #7 in an Addictive Mystery Series

Disappointingly unfocused. The actual murder is entirely overshadowed by the emotional subplot of Tim's missing sister, Jaime.
The main mystery is randomly interspersed and secondary, making the book feel like a missing persons story with a casual, sideline murder. If you seek a single, tightly-plotted cozy mystery, the split focus is a letdown.
