NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * In the spirit of George Carlin and Christopher Hitchens, the son of a former Catholic nun and a Franciscan brother delivers a deeply irreverent and biblically correct takedown of far-right Christian hatred—a book for believers, atheists, agnostics, and anyone who’ll ever have to deal with a Christian nationalist.

For more than two centuries, the United States Constitution has given us the right to a society where church and state exist independently. But Christianity has been hijacked by far-right groups and politicians who seek to impose their narrow views on government, often to justify oppressive and unequal policies. The extremists who weaponize the Bible for earthly power aren’t actually on the side of Jesus—and historically they never have been. How do we fight back against those acting—literally—in bad faith?

Comedian and broadcaster John Fugelsang finally offers the answers. In this informative, perspective-shifting book, Fugelsang takes readers through common fundamentalist arguments on abortion, immigration, LGBTQ rights, and more—exposing their hypocrisy and inaccuracy through scripture, common sense, and deeply inappropriate humor. It offers practical tips on how to debate your loved one, coworker, or neighbor on the issues that divide us using that Bible they claim to follow.

But Fugelsang’s message is about more than just taking down hypocrites. It’s about fighting for the love, mercy, and service that are supposed to make up the heart of Christianity. Told with Fugelsang’s trademark blend of radical honesty, comedy, and deep political and religious knowledge, Separation of Church and Hate is the book every American needs today. It’s a rallying cry for compassion and clarity for anyone of any faith who’s sick of religion being used as a cloaking device for hate.

Lots of LOL moments! Reading style voice and tone was great, really funny. Easy to listen to. Respectful to all perspectives, Just the right amount of serious vs levity. Fact checked time and time over again. Chock full of new information and insights.

Having grown up in Conservative Christianity I learned a lot about how this worldview became dominate and distorted. Resonated with almost every bizarre and mirthful personal vignette from childhood.

No wonder this guy became a funny comedian!

One of the best books I’ve read in some years and I read several a month. Can’t wait for his next book.

Get it. Read it. Gift it to others.

Has the potential to start the conversations needed to catalyze change in our agitated American culture. Perfectly released… Just in time to review before Thanksgiving dinner. 🦃🥧

This book is transformative. It takes politics out of Christianity. It focuses on what Jesus did and said. And challenges us to do the same. John shows us that the love of Jesus and hate cannot coexist. Even though some Christian zealots profess to love Christ, they relish and rejoice in the suffering of others. I strive daily to love my Father God and others in everything that I do. John gives me hope that we can change, we just have to want to!

Jesus is love, not hate!

John spells it out why so many Christians are not following the words of Christ and how you can help them by using the actual words of Jesus; chapter and verse.

Nobody does it better than John

This book really calls me to reflect on the soundness of my own belief in Jesus and my own behavior and actions and thoughts relative to his teachings. I found myself laughing, I found myself shedding a tear occasionally, and at other times looking at myself and realizing I had work to do. This book has really made me think hard about who I am and what I believe in and the reality of what's going on in the political world in the United States right now that is deeper than I even realized. This book might be a hard pill to swallow for some, I know it was a little tough for me in some spots. I highly recommend it.

A reality check
