Not what I was expecting

I saw this book had some good reviews, but I wasn't expecting pro-Stalin and pro-NKVD propaganda. The story in many places reads like a military training manual. As for the good reviews, K.R. Kiehl must have a very large family.

Compelling historical fiction grounded in authentic detail

Saving Krakow is one of those rare books that is both deeply informative and genuinely hard to stop listening to…I literally couldn’t put it down. K. R. Kiehl crafts a clever juxtaposition alternating chapters with actual historical fact with chapters dealing with the human story through the eyes of Sergei Bravo, a fictional Belarusian and a host of actual participants with the use of dialogue that appears to be based on known facts.

While the novel reflects a high level of technical accuracy of the Eastern front during World War II, it never loses sight of the human dimension — the uncertainty, moral complexity, and tension faced by individuals operating in an era defined by geopolitical risk.

Rather than presenting a simplistic or ideological portrayal of East versus West, the book provides a thoughtful and nuanced depiction of the strategic environment surrounding Poland and the broader Soviet sphere. The result is a narrative that feels credible and grounded in reality, rather than sensationalized. For listeners interested in Germany’s disastrous attempt to conquer Russia during World War II, the level of authenticity is a major strength.

Equally noteworthy is the outstanding narration by Chris Gibson, whose performance adds significant depth to the listening experience. Gibson handles complex names, locations, and dialogue with confidence and clarity, helping bring the characters and atmosphere to life. His pacing and tone enhance the tension and realism of the story, making it particularly effective in audio format. I am a voracious consumer of audiobooks and I was amazed to find this relatively new narrator being just as good as top-notch experienced narrators.

This is a well-researched, intelligently written novel that rewards listeners who appreciate historical accuracy alongside compelling storytelling. Highly recommended for fans of military fiction, World War II history, and suspense-driven narratives.
