The cross had been hidden within a secret compartment in an antique mahogany writing box they had purchased at the Dirt Market in Beijing, a compartment sealed for over a hundred years. And with the cross was an unfinished letter from a Captain of the 16th Bengal Lancers to his wife, telling of a brass chest containing church treasure and holy relics looted during the Boxer Rebellion, a chest supposedly buried somewhere in the city once known as Peking. The two Australians decide to return to China and search for the chest. But a secret religious society has learned of their quest and, in the cold mist of Beijing's winter, what had seemed to be a simple task whilst back in their leafy riverside Brisbane suburb, became a deadly game as the curse of the Dark Eye of the Jaguar began to take its revenge.
