Após perder os pais, Amaro é acolhido pela Marquesa de Alegros que deseja o inserir no sacerdócio, ainda que o jovem não tenha vocação para essa posição. Após criar experiência na função, se muda para a cidade de Leiria, a fim de se tornar padre, e se hospeda em um quarto alugado na casa de Amélia, por quem desenvolve profundo interesse.

Polêmica, a obra chamou a atenção da sociedade portuguesa do século XIX, e se tornou um popular romance de tese que denuncia a corrupção do clero e aprofunda o olhar realista-naturalista ao tratar da sexualidade em um contexto sócio-histórico de profundo conservadorismo.

The only thing I desliked is that the narrator has made a few mistakes in pronunciation (very few). One example is "júbilo", which he pronounces "jubilo".
