Leo Ferrel was the terror of the school system in Kooskia, Idaho. Leo was the product of a single parent who spent more time beating on her son than raising him. When Leo’s mother decides that she has an opportunity for a better life, she abandons her son at age 14. Leo is left with an old pickup truck and just enough money to survive while trying to find a better home than the old rusted trailer that was the only home he had ever known. Leo decides to make one of the caves on his property livable in order to escape the dilapidated trailer and try to build a better life. Along the way, Leo finds God and some unexpected help from the mechanic who fixed the old pickup. The two become close and Leo finds a father figure and a legal guardian. Through hard work and a little gold mining along the Clearwater River, Leo slowly pulls himself from the jaws of poverty. Leo joins the Marines after high school finding a home in the Corps and becoming an elite special operator. After being wounded on a black operation, Leo finds himself disabled for life and unable to remain an active-duty Marine; he also finds the love of his life. Together, Leo and Kristy build a life together in Idaho preparing for the coming economic collapse.
