Iron Creek, Wyoming 1878
Carrie Anne Brown and her sister, Bonnie, are both independent and sassy, but with the sudden death of their father, they find themselves homeless and in need of their Uncle Dwight’s charity, a man they’ve never met.
Arriving at his ranch, they find that Dwight is a ruthless man, given to bouts of violence, and they both struggle to fit in. They are forced to work from morning to night as unpaid skivvies, and not only do they have to endure their uncle’s drunken insults but also the sly comments from their cousins Elliot and Ely.
One night when Dwight goes too far, the girls escape and ask for refuge at the Anderson Ranch - a neighbouring family that their uncle holds a grudge against.
Brodie Anderson, the eldest brother, agrees to take them in, and Carrie Anne soon realises that his ranch is the complete opposite of her uncle’s.
Brodie is a strong, steadfast rancher dedicated to his family and fiercely protective of those he loves. Along with his equally upstanding brothers, the girls soon settle into their new life.
As Carrie Anne adjusts to her new surroundings, she struggles to balance her desire for independence with Brodie’s deeply rooted need to keep her safe in a land rife with danger, including the ever-present threat of her vengeful uncle.
Brodie, meanwhile, is challenged by Carrie Anne’s headstrong nature, and when she puts her life in needless danger, she soon finds out that the Andersons believe in good old-fashioned discipline. Ending up over the big handsome cowboy’s knee wasn’t something Carrie Anne had reckoned on. But she quickly finds herself falling for the stern, compelling man.
Through trials, tender moments, and sometimes fiery disagreements, Brodie and Carrie Anne’s relationship deepens. But can Carrie Anne learn to stay out of trouble?
