So the Tale Rudin told was not his alone; though surely it was his, too. It was Rudin who received the Jewel, in exchange for a life saved in the Warsaw ghetto, and Rudin again who now walked the streets of New York in his long search for the one to whom, in token payment for other lives lost at Auschwitz, he might give the Jewel. And it was Rudin, too, who had gone to Auschwitz, looking for the appearance of truth, for immunity from truth, for atonement in truth.

Rudin lived the Tale, was himself part of it. Perhaps that is why not only the truth, but immunity and atonement as well, escaped him. Still, as Rudin seemed to know, the truth was in the Tale; and, finally, it was told.
