"Funny, furious, and profane." —The New York Times

“Not your typical celebrity memoir.” —Jimmy Kimmel

Unflinchingly honest and darkly funny, You with the Sad Eyes unveils a side of Christina Applegate we’ve never seen, forever cementing her formidable and iconoclastic legacy.

Christina Applegate came of age on sets and stages, expected to be on time, with lines learned, ready for lights-camera-action. What started as a financial necessity soon became an emotional escape from a tumultuous home life in the infamous Laurel Canyon scene of the 70s and 80s. She rocketed to stardom on the sitcom Married...with Children and went on to captivate audiences in classics like Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead…, Anchorman, and Dead to Me in her five-decade long career.

Then it all stopped. A Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis in 2021 confined her to a king-sized bed and the company of memories she’d rather forget: memories of the self-doubt and body dysmorphia that stalked her meteoric rise, of her mother’s fight against addiction and abuse after her father left, and of the tax life had taken on her body and mind that was suddenly coming due.

Now, at her most intimate and vulnerable, she unveils a story not even those closest to her fully know. She returns to the diaries she kept her whole life, finding the pain matched by joy, the losses mitigated by the extraordinary, and the weight of life lifted by her unrelenting belief that something greater lay ahead. No longer willing to lock herself away and with the perspective only our own mortality can bring, she knew it was imperative to tell it all.

You with the Sad Eyes presents a remarkable woman and her legacy. In her own words, “I truly believe that books can make people feel less alone. That’s why I’m doing this. You with the Sad Eyes won’t be some big violin scratching for my life. But it will be real. It will be filled with the ups and downs, the humor and grief of life.

So here I am.

Real me.

Lots to say.”

What a woman. Everything she’s been through with so much grace. I remember her joking about her double mastectomy when I was young, and she’s hard on herself now about how she represented herself with comedy during those interviews, but I remember thinking, because of those interviews, that I wasn’t so scared of getting my mammograms because I’d be able to get a boob job if they found cancer. I know it’s a lot deeper than that, but as a teenager she made life a little less scary. I admire that about her. Incredible read. I listened to the audio book while doing my run, and was running along the bay just crying.

It takes just the first page to be covered in goosebumps and to know you’re in for a treat

Christina gives such an intimate look into her lifetime. All the things we didn’t know! She’s honest and hilarious. This book flew by. I couldn’t believe it was over so quickly and I could listen to her all day.

Even better than I could imagine

What I did like about this was that Christina Applegate narrated it and gave it her voice because the whole theme of the book was basically giving voice to everything we experience in life, as women especially. It's time we're honest with each other and let each other know that nobody is just cruising through life without any issues at all. It's time we stop judging each other for things we hear or think we know about someone. We are all doing our best here. This is what this book meant for me.

it's time we're honest with each other

Christina Applegate's ability to go to the truth, as funny, horrific, and painful as it is,at times, for her to talk about them. it's as if you sitting in a room with a friend, and she's telling all the secret things, she finds you privileged enough to share with. she's very real. not just a veneer of the famous person projected.

Her down to the true grit, honesty.

Over the last 6 decades I have read or listened to literally hundreds of biographies and autobiographies. I have never come across one so raw and honest. What made it even more real is the author’s frank delivery and emotion.

This book will do a lot of good in the world. It will teach people that they don’t have to put on a brave face. They can come right out and say “This disease sucks and I hate it!”

The author has had more than her share of trauma and pain. I hope this book helps her and her daughter find peace.

Real does not even begin to describe this book.
