When a lucrative contract to guide a "geological survey" deep into a restricted sector of the Amazon feels wrong, veteran survivalist Daniel Rusk trusts his gut. The client is a shadowy corporation, the gear is military-grade, and the destination is a place the locals call the Tenebris Zone—a land of bad spirits and a chilling, unnatural silence.

Trapped in a canyon that time forgot, Rusk and the expedition team discover they were lied to. They are not here for minerals. They are here to hunt a living fossil, an evolved predator that has dominated its isolated kingdom for sixty-five million years. But the roles of hunter and hunted are quickly reversed.

Stalked by an intelligent creature that moves like a ghost through the trees and coordinates attacks with terrifying precision, the team is picked off one by one. As their technologically advanced fortress becomes a tomb, alliances shatter. Rusk finds himself in a desperate battle for survival, not only against the prehistoric horrors in the jungle but against the obsessive greed of his own commander. Cornered at the end of the world, their only mission is to escape the notice of the apex that remains.

What was so interesting about this Lester Wolfe book was he populated it with protagonists & antagonists that become so traumatized by encountering an unknown monster so horrific they become mentally unhinged. At first I’d yell at my computer “You idiot don’t do that!” But then I recalled H P lovecraft’s assertion that if a person actually saw “what could not be” most folks would loose their minds. As Lester Wolfe’s story progresses and the lost explorers experience more sanity bending encounters their behavior gets weird. By the end I wasn’t sure who the real protagonist was. Perhaps the tale didn’t really have one and instead spoke about human-kind as a species with its monstrous behavior vs “another-other-creature” just as bad. I dunno. What I do know is it was a scary and terrifying action/horror ride from an author who is one of the best in the action/horror genre. All that in one hand, in the other is the AI narration which I’m not in love with. It mispronounces words and often gives the wrong emotional inflections to serious situations. Yeah Lester Wolfe’s novels are a bit shorter than most, however they are good. Perhaps one day the publisher will release several in one volume. I’d ask Lester Wolfe to write a long ten to twelve hour novel, but I’m not sure my heart could take that much stressful edge-of-the-seat-ness.

Lester Wolfe’s most frightening monster yet.
