South Indian sage Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) is renowned for his teachings on Self-inquiry, the direct path to Self-realization. Ramana realized the Self and transcended ego-consciousness at the age of 16. For the rest of his life he lived and taught on the holy hill, Arunachala.
Muruganar, inspired by Ramana Maharshi, wrote an opening line to a poem:
“Lo, very easy is Self-Knowledge,
Lo, very easy indeed.”

He then handed the initial lines to Ramana Maharshi and humbly requested him to elaborate. Bhagavan responded by composing the verses called Atma Vidya or "Self-Knowledge."

Richard Clarke has studied this text for more than 30 years and offers comments in ordinary language to help you deepen your understanding of this profound text. He includes practice notes and inquiry questions you can ask and answer within yourself.
