Critic reviews

"Sounding majestic, theatrical, and ever so slightly sinister, veteran BBC actor Andrew Wincott has just the right voice to introduce the listener to three key selections of one of the greatest works of English literature. In this 17th-century work, Milton masterfully combines classical mythology, epic narrative, and biblical allusions to present Satan as a flawed, demanding humanlike character. No poet had ever done that before. In Book IX, when Adam and Eve are separated in the Garden of Eden and Satan takes advantage of the situation to tempt Eve with the forbidden apple, all of humankind comes tumbling down. Wincott's exceptional command of the poem's pace and flowing free-verse rhythms makes this presentation absolutely understandable and, best of all, wonderfully entertaining." This is everything I ever wanted!! No one can deliver Milton’s famous epic like the devil we know and love. From day one of early access to BG3, I have wanted to hear Andrew Wincott read at least the first two books of Paradise Lost, so I literally screamed when I saw this was available. Thank you for making this!

This appears to be geared towards students since it has the study guide portion, and I would absolutely recommend listening to this if you are taking a class on Milton. When I studied Milton in college I remember it being difficult sometimes to get through, and hearing it read aloud will help with the cadence and inflection, all of which are perfect in this reading.

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT

This is a stunning audiobook.

Andrew Wincott, perhaps best known for playing the devil Raphael in Baldur's Gate 3, is a gaming icon who also happens to be a terrific classical actor. His reading of Milton here really is mesmerizing. The old language melts in his mouth and out comes a.
curiously modern story.

But what makes this totally original is that after the reading, there's a Student Guide, as though it is told by Satan, written by Larkin, known for ground-breaking ideas. Her superb narration of The Complete Novels of Jane Austen for example was the very first audiobook ever produced of such a length.

Here she has found a way to popularize the work of John Milton, who is often studied reluctantly in schools and colleges. That is no small feat. Regardless of whether or not you play video games, Wincott is a first class classical actor and his narration here is mesmerizing.

This audiobook will thrill a new generation interested in the original epic battle between Heaven and Hell, Satan and God, Good and Evil. It's a theme that cracks with resonance today. Hiring Wincott and having Satan as a guide is a bold idea and it works. Bravo on all fronts.

A mesmerizing recording
