Teenage fantasy written by a teenager

I made it through book 1 and part of book 2. This is a good value for 1 credit, but it is just not for me.

The story is a sword and sorcery tale that is really just a horny teenage fantasy. Expect butt, boob, and poop jokes. Character interactions are written as caricatures, and feel pretty hollow. Additionally, the MC is really just a head strong douche. Think lawful good paladin and everything that goes with that. There is a reason this archetype is used as a foil to more realistic heroes in other series and it is frustrating to try to follow him. There is also no reasons given why he is the only capable person in an empire.

This is presented in single POV. It also uses a tell not show narration style, which is frustrating. Instead of a description of characters taking action, you get the MC's internal monologue about it.

Overall, this is not a bad series, it just hits too many of my pet peeves. I am just not the target audience.

Great value for the credit, but….

The MC is a really bad person. He just isn’t a moral character and gets worse as it goes on. He chuckles as he feeds the arm of a dead baby to his pet, in book 1, and gets worse from there. I’m sure the rebuttal will be that they are goblins, but the paragraph before is of the women and children with their hands up begging for their lives. Later you find out they were almost certainly slaves who had magic contracts so had no choice in being there.
How does he handle this revelation? Is it by reflecting on what he thought was necessary and course correcting now that he better understands? By creating a concentration camp where he buys slaves in order to butcher them after he imports them from off planet.

He sexually assaults a woman who thinks he is taking her as a sex slave because he doesn’t explain she is wrong about the situation. When she fights back he slaps her into submission. Once she is told the actual situation (that he is helping her get away) she accepts it, but that’s after he has already finished. He kills a guard who shoves him when he demands access to a room with no proof. There was an assassination attempt less than a week ago on them. The MC is gone for a month after a coup and shows back up furious people made decisions. The fact that he smashes his head like a melon for literally doing his job and is given sympathy sex for being stressed after screaming at the woman and their families is wild.

The list goes on. He is objectively a monster. He is fighting horrible people too, but he does no better.


All that said, this book has some positive things. The wives aren’t purely bi-sexual nymphomaniacs. Some are into each other and others are friends. They form groups and are bonded by different things. They aren’t a homogeneous blob. Some have children from dead spouses or are war widows. They are branded as harlots for having a sex life prior to the MC. Some take on lovers on the side (no men for paternity reasons) and inform the MC that they are doing it. They aren’t asking for permission either. They have their own desires and he is gone so often that it is too bad if he cares when he is gone. It is refreshing honestly.

This book is great value, but it is a mix of things that are mature for the genre (women being more than receptacles with quirks, despite most being shallowly written), and really juvenile understanding of basic concepts (genocide and SA are bad). His plan for freeing slaves is to overpay drastically for them for instance. Why he thinks giving slavers extra money will hurt the slave trade of millions of worlds is a puzzle.

Fantasy, Bombastic Babes, and Griffins

First off, it's an omnibus, so LOTS of great content rolling in 71hrs.
The story is great, good twists, and fantastic world building. Marcus told a clear story with strong progression and kept me wanting to listen more.

There were a couple of minor audio slip ups during my listen, but nothing to get me to stop listening. Both Daniel and Rebecca were great choices to narrate, the two seamlessly rolled together as a good pair.

good book tho book 4 and 5 was a little rushed. Couldve been a more action focused series but none the less , a credit well spent,it is a good one! Recommend it ~"Stay classy!"~ Griff
