Being thrust into command of the Rebel Destroyer Unity, Captain Caleb Currie finds resistance from a crew that considers him too young to command. This undercurrent provides immediate conflict as he settles into the captain’s chair. When the Rebel Fleet commander considers him expendable, he is sent on a mission to insert a spy into the Imperial Court. The resulting information gain from this clandestine soirée places him yet again in harm’s way as the Unity is sent to reconnoiter Imperial space.
The results of this probe place the entire Rebel Fleet on a raid deep into enemy space. Whirlwind action follows, in which Currie moves center stage in the Rebel effort. Gaining respect, he finds his efforts rewarded with increased responsibility and more dangerous assignments.
Beyond the backdrop of battle, Caleb must wrestle with the emerging self-awareness of his android servant. Having its programming corrupted by an alien culture, this machine develops in ways many thought impossible. At issue is the fundamental question; “What does it mean to be human?”
