In a world of humans, elves, animal humanoids and more, the struggle for power, vengeance, and justice is vast. The young fox Jakama of the free lands seeks justice and to bring down the mighty emperor Ceezar, the jaguar. When both sides are threatened by religious fanatic humans attempting to exterminate the sins known as the animals, the two must come together in the search for the giants or kill one another first. Each has deeper reasons for what they do and each has a part to play in the clash of swords, shields, axes, and wits. Blood, politics, adventure, and love along with the struggle for acceptance, change, and to do better fill the journey for each character. Real life issues plague some of the side characters and the exciting banter between bore and fox bring comedic relief.

The voices and characters

I loved the character shifts and storytelling tone as it was narrated! Tense moments felt tense and the character development felt immersive!

Never a long wait for action!

I felt like I was taking part in a role-playing game...and it was constantly *almost* my turn. The characters were that different and that well-developed. Their arcs shifted and twisted.
My only dislike: I don't get why the side-character was even there, except to fulfill a trope requirement.
Overall, a fantastic and entertaining read! I'm excited for book 2!

ambitious story with a full cast

there's a lot to like about this story, and more than a few themes play out.
most relatable to me were the revelation of possible extinction, and of redemption.
not a kids book, and the author doesn't claim that. the violence does reach GoT level in places, as does the "affection".
the character voices were fantastic.
for fantasy lovers, I do recommend a listen.
