What's the first rule of fight club?

Don’t invite the friggin' Reaper to fight club!

Cryptids are turning up dead all over Charlotte, and this time it's not Harker's fault. He's tasked with finding out who is killing shifters and leaving their bodies in conspicuous places, and the best way to do that is to go undercover where the killings are taking place, find out who's in charge, and persuade them to stop.

Persuade them in the very Quincy Harker way, of course.

So Harker hides his identity and gets himself conscripted as one of the combatants in Charlotte's very own cryptid cage fighting arena, battling it out with vampires, werewolves, and faeries, oh my! Along the way, he makes a friend (yeah, pretty much only one—have you met Harker?), learns to embrace the nickname he's always hated, and throws down in some truly epic battles. Then he squares off against an uber-powerful vampire in the Main Event, and business really picks up.

When Harker finally figures out who's running this ring of lethal combat sports, the answer is one he never suspects and leads to a final confrontation he never wanted. But sometimes, when the chips are down, you really should in fact fear the Reaper.

The fight scenes were awesome as always, so was the banter. It was an interesting situation for Harker this time. I did not see that ending coming. This series rocks out loud. If you are in between the Dresden Files and Eric Carter novels but haven’t checked out Quincy Harker, you should jump in post haste. I have no clue how to talk about specific things I liked in the book without spoilers. So I’ll leave it there.

Awesome fight scenes, great banter. 10/10

Overall great continuation of the story but the ending seemed a little rushed. Not consistent with other books within the storyline.

Solid entry

“On your left!”
After previous books quoting from The Avengers, and my bemoaning the lack of a Big Moment where Team Quincy assembles, this installment pays tribute in spectacular fashion. This book was a pulpier, lighter, standalone story than the multi-book arcs … until the Big Bad reveal.

I was a little disappointed at the identity of the villain, and the ease of vanquishment. For anyone who has made it this far in the series, i feel like the villain/final confrontation deserved more. There’s a fair bit of soap-boxing about who Harker is and what makes him tick; it was a little heavy-handed, but harmless.

And, in true Avengers fashion, while the book is a standalone, there’s a post-credit style epilogue that tees up the next arc. Unfortunately, it seems the next book will get back to darker plots about worldwide threats and revenge. I just hope it doesn’t wallow too much, because these standalone Thunderdome episodes are loads more fun.

P.S. Audible needs to fix the order in its library. This is Book 10 of the full length books, but should be listed as Book 22 chronologically after Book 21’s Lost.

I did say I wanted an Avengers assemble moment
