Grief took everything from Emma Whitman—her fiancé, her faith, and her sense of purpose. Seeking solace, she returns to her hometown of Laurel Ridge, West Virginia, hoping to leave the pain behind. But when she crosses paths with Mark Thompson, a widower and devoted father, Emma’s plans to stay guarded and distant are tested by the warmth of the small town, the kindness of its people, and the quiet strength of the man who stirs her heart.

Mark Thompson knows all too well the ache of loss. After his wife passed away, his focus became raising his young daughter, Olivia, and trusting in God’s plan for their future. But when Emma reappears in his life, she awakens feelings he thought were long buried. As the holiday season unfolds, their connection deepens through shared moments—from ice skating under a blanket of snow to decorating Christmas trees in the glow of twinkling lights.

Yet as Emma struggles with the memories of her past and the physical scar that serves as a painful reminder, she finds herself torn between the fear of losing love again and the possibility of a future filled with faith, hope, and new beginnings. Can she open her heart to Mark and Olivia and trust that love can heal even the deepest wounds?

This is a lovely story for someone who desperately needs their mood lifted. Although the main characters experience some inner turmoil in the first few chapters, the rest of book was highly predictable smooth sailing. The only mystery for me was trying to predict when the nuch needed conflict would kick in. "They're getting in a car. Oh someone will be killed or injured and revive pain and doubt from the past." And although I despise smut, it was noticeable that the relationship between the main characters totally lacked passion. All of their kisses were described as "soft and sweet ".

This was a written Christian versian of an early 2000 Hallmark movie plot except it had even less plot (not even an attempt at a predictable climatic moment) movie. I would call it Pure Flix, but Pure Flix has more creativity. The plot is the super predictable plots Hallmark put out in the early 2000s. Old high school sweethearts, widower father, girl returns home, bump into each other literally, instantly fall back in love, apologize for breaking up in the first place, down play past tragedies as child except role of maternal figure instantly, Christmas tree shopping decorating, cookie decorating, kids' program, Christmas festival, proposal and all the families together Christmas morning. check. check. check . All with no conflict. Thankfully it was free so I could laugh about it, but I am so glad I didn't buy it.
