The sea is a mirror. It does not lie. As we stand on the coast staring at it, we in fact look deep into our own naked soul, while the sea paints for us our inner landscapes, complex pictures made of thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It is an ancient relationship the one between the man and the sea, a primeval bond dating back ages. This is what I wanted to convey when I took these pictures on the coast of Italy, many years ago. These shots were taken during interminable, solitary walks in unreachable places of spectacular beauty and mesmerizing names. I wanted to convey the silence. I wanted to capture the dreamy, metaphysical meditations we all go through when facing the majesty of the sea. In putting together this book, it came natural to me to add to the images quotes of Joseph Conrad, the beloved master that depicted the whole human experience through the reflections of the sea. The juxtaposition of text and images thus created the illusion of the journal of a castaway facing the ocean of solitude that surround us all.
