John Kavanagh has chased every thrill the world could offer, but Mount Everest is different. The mountain does not care about records or glory—it strips men bare, exposing the secrets they’ve buried and the failures they cannot outrun.
High on its slopes, whispers of his past grow louder, and shadows of those who climbed for the wrong reasons claw at him with icy hands. Only a mysterious Sherpa seems to see the truth behind the adventurer—and offers John a chance at redemption.
But redemption has a cost.
Pulled through time and haunted by generations, John must face what he’s long denied. The higher he climbs, the thinner the air—the closer the mountain comes to claiming not just his life, but his very soul.
One of the strongest elements of the book is the way Striplin portrays the shadows—not just as dark figures, but as representations of the devil trying to pull you away from God. The idea that these shadows leave a red mark on the wrist symbolizes how temptation, fear, and spiritual attacks can leave scars on a person’s life. Reading this made me stop and reflect on my own walk with God and the times I’ve felt pulled away or overwhelmed by life’s battles. It made the story feel incredibly real.
This book challenged me in the best way. The themes are handled with insight, purpose, and emotional depth. As I read, I found myself connecting with the characters and examining my own choices, faith, and growth. Very few books encourage that kind of inward reflection, but this one does it beautifully.
A part that touched me personally was how the story reminded me of my favorite verse, Isaiah 41:10:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
This verse captures the heart of the book—no matter how strong the shadows seem, God’s strength, presence, and protection are stronger.
“Shadows of Everyman” spoke to my heart, opened my eyes, and encouraged me in ways I didn’t expect. It is a story that doesn’t just stay in your mind—it settles into your spirit and becomes a lesson you carry with you. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a story that inspires, challenges, and reminds us of God’s power even in our darkest moments.
