On the hunt for hidden treasure, two former best friends turned adversaries must put the past behind them if they hope to make it home.
This childhood friends-to-lovers male/male romantic fantasy for fans of Tusk Love and Sara Raasch crackles with tension and heat.
When he isn’t training as a Warden to become half the hero his father was, Griff Sayer is in the business of breaking hearts all across the town of Mayfair, although that slows down after settling in with his current boyfriend. Griff's ex-best friend, Mal Pryce, meanwhile, is in business with whatever or whoever puts good money in his hands. Now in their mid-twenties, Griff and Mal have only exchanged scathing looks and carefully barbed jabs since the fight that sent them their separate ways years ago. But all that begins to change when an attack Mal plotted for his shady boss leaves Griff near death and their childhood friend Alys as his savior, forcing them back into each other’s orbit.
Livid at his boss, Mal makes a deal to earn his freedom and Griff’s safety. He has just four weeks to retrieve an ancient treasure from Rotrose Mire, a remote swamp known for its ghostly and beastly dangers, the same treasure Alys’s beloved father, Rhun, had been searching for when he disappeared for good. Armed with a map and a broken blade of Rhun’s, Mal sets off—with Alys and a reluctant and newly single Griff in tow.
Yet the explosive tension between the two men—along with the dangers of the mire pressing in around them—makes for a more difficult journey than any of them could have anticipated. As Griff and Mal peel back their tough facades and shared feelings heat up in unexpected ways as they learn to trust again, they also realize that someone—or something—seems to be following their path. Someone who doesn’t want them to succeed, no friend to their parents’ old enemies, but also no friend to would-be heroes…

This story was genuinely interesting, but I’ll be honest — the writing style made it a little difficult to follow at times. Even with the dual POVs, the third-person narration occasionally felt choppy and distant, and I found myself rereading a few chapters just to fully connect the dots. The audiobook unfortunately did NOT help matters. The narrators didn’t really bring the emotional depth or clarity this story needed, which made some scenes harder to track than they should’ve been.
BUT underneath all of that? There’s actually a really beautiful story here.
At the center are three childhood friends who once promised they’d always stay together, only for grief, secrets, and life to pull them in completely different directions. They’re all still deeply tied to the memory of the women who raised them and the father figure who disappeared on a quest and never returned. That lingering loss hangs over the entire story in such an emotional way.
And then there’s Mal and Griff. 😭 These two absolutely wrecked me. Their falling out followed them well into adulthood, but underneath all the bitterness and hurt was this very obvious truth: they were hopelessly in love with each other long before either of them realized it. Once Mal discovers that the deadly scheme he helped build was actually targeting Griff, the entire story shifts into this high-stakes quest full of danger, treasure hunting, old wounds, and second chances.
The romance itself was honestly the strongest part for me. The spice scenes were fine — nothing groundbreaking — but the declarations of love, devotion, and loyalty? THAT is where this book shines. Some of the lines between Mal and Griff were genuinely gorgeous and emotionally intimate in a way that hit harder than the physical scenes did.
Overall, this book felt messy in places, but also heartfelt, adventurous, and surprisingly emotional. Definitely worth the ride if you’re willing to push through a slightly confusing narrative style for a really rewarding character journey.

NOW, Mal and Griff gave me all the heart eyes !!!!! Talk about polar opposite personalities and positively perfect chemistry!!! These two have been through it! Friends to enemies to lovers, oh my!!!! I will not spoil a single second of these two's story but this is absolutely a story of two souls that are lost without the other and the longing is swoon worthy!!!!
The spice in this was perfection! Perfectly placed throughout, never overpowering but enough to keep you completely satiated !!! I am so excited to read more @sarahmarshauthor and can't recommend this book enough!!!! It is absolutely noteworthy to mention the INCREDIBLE job @vincentriquierva and @simondornet did bringing these characters to life in the audio!!!
