Starting over was never part of the playbook. Fresh off a failed marriage and years of putting everyone else first, Emmy Hudson returns to her small hometown determined to rebuild a life for her and her teenage son, Jace. With her brother close by and Jace joining the once-elite Mayhem Hockey Club, it seems like the perfect second chance. Beckett Conway is back in Linwood for the worst reasons: a blown-out hip, a tanked NHL season, and a mom whose health is declining too fast for his liking. Coaching the local youth hockey team wasn’t on his rehab checklist, but watching Jace sneak onto his backyard pond to practice brings back everything he loved about this little mountain town. Too bad Jace’s mom is sarcastic, stubborn, and somehow the most attractive woman he’s ever bantered with. As if that wasn’t enough, Emmy is his best friend’s sister and in charge of clearing him to play again. Sparks fly, lines blur, and before long, Emmy discovers that maybe finding herself means letting someone else in, even if that someone was the last person she expected to fall for.

Lee Samuels and Vanessa Moyen were the best pick for these two characters!

Aimee Vance comes out strong with the start to a new series. It has everything I have come to enjoy about her books and has provided me with so much more to love. The humor and jokes are spot on. The banter is on point. The sarcasm and wit cuts, and the tender moments hit home. And! And! HOCKEY!
Emmy is the number 1 best girls’ girl, and I will do everything to protect her. She has been through it, but she doesn’t let it slow her down. She is still out there being the best mom she can be to Jace, and watching the two of them together was the best. She also puts in the work to build her own little found family and, if I am a sucker for anything, its best friends and found family. It feels like Aimee just reaches inside my brain and puts the dynamics I love right on the page.
Beckett is trouble! From the get-go, he had me. All flirty and muscly, but he has a journey of his own. Watching him rebuild a world he left to the wayside just felt important. Being there for the people he loves. All of it! He is just the best. And don’t even get me started on his relationship with Emmy’s son. TEARS!
One of the things Aimee does best is side characters, and wow, did she nail it. She crafted a beautiful Linwood found family for our characters, and I am truly obsessed with every one of them. The girlies. The bromances. The kids! This book just put out the best friendship vibes, and if you see me move to Colorado, mind your business. Or honestly, come along!
I also really enjoyed her approach to the hockey element of the book. I have not read one before where you get the perspective of a parent watching their child play, but also getting to see the coach on the bench as well. This helped create a fantastic balance in the book. Hockey was part of it through and through. It was a character itself almost. It mattered.
This book was unreal. An absolute beauty. I can’t wait to see what she does next!!

I don't want to go into to much depth, it needs to be read blind and I'm so anxious for the next book in the series. No worries though different people, this one has an end 😉
All the things. I really enjoyed this book, usually I'm down in the depths of darkness you can't see nothing in front of you but this ... amazing lightness. Don't get me wrong it had some notes in it that were heartbreaking, illness, narcissistic ex ... it was beautifully written though

Recap Quickie: Emmy Hudson-Meyers and her 15-year-old, hockey-playing son Jace have settled into Emmy’s small hometown in CO after moving across the country and away from Emmy’s lying, cheating ex-husband. Beckett Conway, right wing for the NHL’s Denver Yetis, is home for the first time in a decade- recovering from hip surgery and visiting his mom who’s been in poor health. Beckett and his childhood best friend Ty (Emmy’s brother) decide to team up to coach Jace’s hockey team. Beckett must find physical therapy and training in Linwood and guess who just happens to be qualified to do both: Emmy! Bring on the stretching!
Emmy has built a lovely Pilates studio and begun finding supportive fun girl friends who feel like family. And Beckett... is a FLIRT and sees that Emmy has grown up to be an amazing person (and hot hockey mom)! Emmy can’t help but find him attractive too and things heat up between them. But Beckett’s stay in Linwood is temporary and Emmy’s heart is protective of her and Jace after her divorce. Will she play it safe or let herself believe in love one more time?
My Thoughts & 40+ Appeal: This was just such a good one. I love me a spicy romance but
when you throw in women SEEING and supporting other women, I just melt. It’s my kryptonite. It made me swoon, it made me cry, it made slide into the author’s DM’s. Women DO lovingly support other women all the time- in wonderfully non-judgmental ways- even when they’re different- or have different parenting philosophies or styles. And yes of course we sometimes judge too! But everyone already knows about that! So it’s nice to see this lovely side written about too. Thank you Aimee Vance! 🫶🏻
Anyway- back to the romance...Emmy and Beckett were the BEST (and fittest) couple ever! There was a LOT of character development so I feel like we really got to know them. I hope we get to see a lot of them (and Jace) in future books. The pacing seemed pretty realistic for a mom who wanted to prioritize her teen and not introduce him to a love interest too soon. Between all of the above plus the MC’s being 35+, this book can really appeal to the 40+ crowd!
Narrator Vibes: Vanessa Moyen & Lee Samuels were gooood in this ‘dual’ narration which I always enjoy. In case you’re new to audio- dual (in this case) is where each narrator reads their entire POV chapter all male/ female/ etc. parts. I actually really liked Vanessa’s male voice! It was breathy and hot! And Lee had to take on some emotional moments: regret, vulnerability, fear, and trauma. I thought his understated way of doing so was spot on and matched Beckett’s energy.
Spice: 2.5/5

When an injury forces Beckett off the ice he takes up coaching the Mayhem Hockey Club and that’s where he bumps heads with one of his teenage boys mum, Emmy Hudson……..
Emmy only wants the best for her son Jace and that means making sure his new hockey coach sees him for what he’s worth and that’s when things get real interesting. What follows is a story that’s entertaining, engaging and witty.
I fell hard and fast for Beckett and I adored Emmy but what took this book to another level was he humour and depth this story had.
Vanessa Moyen and Lee Samuels did a great job bringing the characters and their story to life. They were spot on with the banter, the passion and the drama plus they were easy on the ears.
Witty and entertaining with great narration
