Shamus Award Nominee for Best Paperback Original P.I. Novel of 2009 by the Private Eye Writers of America!

From Raymond Benson, author of sixteen novels, including six James Bond 007 novels, comes this second original mystery/thriller set in the world of rock ‘n' roll.

Spike Berenger is back in another “Rock ‘n' Roll Hit” by award winning, internationally best-selling author Raymond Benson!

Musicians in progressive rock bands in Chicago are being murdered-one by one. The local police have no clues, but several of the musicians who fear they're next on the hit list claim that the killer is a ghost from the past-a woman who was reported missing and presumed dead for over thirty years! The Rockin' Security team is called into action. Spike and his partner, Suzanne, travel to Chicago to investigate the case, only to find that no one wants to talk. As Spikedigs deeper, he begins to unearth a lode of deadly secrets involving sex, psychedelic drugs, and, of course, rock ‘n' roll. And it isn't longbefore the private detective becomes a pawn in a very dangerous game.

Spike Berenger and his company, Rockin' Security, are hired to find out who is killing musicians in Chicago. The only connection in these murders seems to be that they are all involved in the Chicago prog rock scene (a made up genre). Spike and his partner, Suzanne, go to Chicago to try to uncover the truth and find themselves diving down a rabbit hole from 40+ years ago.

This was a good book, but could have been better. The author spent a lot of time creating fake bands with fake connections and I got confused/bored with this part of the book. I know there needed to be some background, but I think there was too much of this. Also, the lengthy descriptions of the hallucinogenic drug experiences were a bit over the top for me.

The twist at the end of the book was unexpected and I thought I had it all figured out earlier...I was wrong! I did enjoy the way the author named the chapters after rock songs that indicated what the chapter was all about. I found myself hearing most of these songs in my head after their introduction and think they would make an awesome playlist.

The narrator did a pretty good job, but some of his voices were pretty grating. All in all, this was an entertaining book but could have been pared down to make it better.

The narration of the story was fantastic! There were a lot of characters to keep track of but the narrator had distinct voices for each, which really helped. I really loved all the Chicago references in the book!

Great book!
