To find two missing women, a detective must dive into the secrets of her past in a blood-freezing novel of suspense by USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb.

Detective Adeline Cooper swore she’d never return to Mississippi, where her corrupt family rules through fear and her career was upended by betrayal. But then she receives a photograph of a local woman who has gone missing, along with a cryptic, chilling message: Pretty, pretty princess. See her smile…see her die.

Soon after Adeline arrives in her hometown, a second woman is kidnapped, and there are disturbing connections between the two victims and the detective. Both women bear an eerie resemblance to Adeline and share her fear of water. A new message makes the kidnapper’s game terrifyingly clear: You’re next.

When past and present collide at the river’s edge, Adeline will finally understand why she’s been dreaming of drowning her whole life.

Revised edition: Previously published as Anywhere She Runs, this edition of The Drowning Season includes editorial revisions.

Great story! Frustrating family secrets and lies bundled with a fantastic narrator made this a fast listen. Couldn’t stop listening.
I love a continuation of a storyline! If I had known this was more of Cooper’s story, I would’ve started it sooner.

Well, if I never hear the word "damned" again it will still be too soon!

struggled to finish

Detective Adeline Cooper had left her Mississippi hometown nine years ago—and she swore she'd never return. Yet after receiving two cryptic letters, she finds herself heading back. The letters are connected to the disappearance of lawyer Cherry Prescott, and Adeline is determined to do more than simply hand over evidence; she wants to actively participate in the investigation.

The novel began promisingly but lost momentum halfway through, becoming increasingly predictable and tedious. Adeline proved frustrating as a protagonist—she comes across as stubborn and self-reliant to a fault, dismissing any assistance from those around her. "She knows best!"

The romantic subplot felt forced and unconvincing. By the end, I was eager for the story to conclude. I had anticipated the major plot twists well before they were revealed.

Though I typically finish what I start, I only completed this book because I was reading it as part of a challenge.

The book is available free through Kindle Unlimited for both reading and listening.

Started out well but became very predictable.

Unless a book is outstanding or unbearable, I rarely write a review. Although I was somewhat entertained by the story of The Drowning Season, I could not stand listening to anymore after the 7th chapter. The accents and voices were grating on my nerves. Like nails on a chalkboard. I am sorry, but if anyone asks, I would recommend to read rather than listen to this book.

I love her books, but I was not impressed by this one. It was really hard to follow and it was just nasty.
