Somehow, inexplicably, her cold skin makes mine ignite, a trail of fire following the path of her fingers until she lets go of my chin and the flames burn out.
Undead phlebotomist Florence has sworn off dating humans ever since her last boyfriend upped and died on her. After all, it’s not easy finding your happily ever after when you’re a vampire.
So when she meets a handsome stranger in a bar, things get complicated. Even more so, when he turns up at her clinic the very next day…
But bartender Quinn has his own problems too. Neither of them are looking for love, but unfortunately they’re just each other’s type. Blood type, that is.

Great story!

The description and the tags lean heavily into “comedy/humor,” but while there are lighthearted moments and there’s a lot of warmth between main and supporting characters, this felt more like a story about processing grief…for those who are already gone, and for those who have a dire but uncertain prognosis.
The blurb mentions that her last boyfriend “upped and died,” but again that doesn’t do it justice. Her fiancé died in her arms while they were both human and she has spent the subsequent century and a half carrying that grief, and his spirit, close.
When she meets a distant relative who bears a striking resemblance to her lost love, she is both drawn to and repelled by him. He receives a diagnosis shortly after they meet that will either turn him into a vampire or kill him outright in a matter of weeks or months, and there’s not much they can do other than prepare for either eventuality… revel in the human experiences he’s certain to soon lose, and introduce him to the positive aspects of vampirism in case he should “survive” his condition. She must decide if she’s willing to open herself to love and potential loss again.
They are supported on all sides by people who love them, and the duet style narration is well done and left me with more of a cozy feel than a laugh out loud one.
As I mentioned I was prepared for a fun but probably forgettable paranormal rom-com, but what I experienced was a cozy and surprisingly human paranormal romance with more substance than I expected.

For whatever it’s worth, neither of their blood types really have anything to do with the story, and there’s no question of him being the reincarnation of her lost love. He’s definitely not, which I think made it a stronger story.
Not what I expected - in a good way
