As the night stretches on, Jeremiah drifts in and out of consciousness, slipping into memories he has spent a lifetime avoiding: a childhood accident, a family lost, a truth about himself he never fully understood. Meanwhile, the nurse who keeps vigil beside him begins to remember fragments of her own past — a promise made to a dying child, a life cut short, and a moment she never truly left behind.

Bound together by loss and an unspoken connection that reaches across decades, patient and nurse hover on the edge between life and death. When the truth finally emerges, Verity must choose whether to cling to what remains of her existence — or sacrifice it to save the man she once vowed never to abandon.
