Can a ghost solve his own murder? Charlie is dead, but he doesn't understand what's happened. He thinks he may have been murdered. Together with another ghost, Lizzie, they set out to investigate his death. As ghosts there are only two things that they can do that can affect alive people. They can change the temperature, and they can blow gusts of cold wind. But being ghosts, they are able to go where they want without search warrants and listen in to conversations without people knowing that they are there. Using just these, will they be able to find out what really happened, and if they do, will they be able to guide the police to the murderer? Things are complicated by an evil ghost that seems to be also interested in Charlie's death. Action & Adventure Crime Murder Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Suspense Thriller & Suspense Haunted Ghost

I really enjoyed listening to The Ghost Detectives. It’s a refreshing take on mystery, combining investigative work with paranormal elements in a way that keeps things interesting throughout.
The story is engaging and easy to follow, with a solid pace and enough twists to keep you curious about what’s coming next. The concept of solving ghost-related cases adds a unique touch that sets it apart from typical mystery stories.
The characters are likable and bring a good balance of serious moments and lighter interactions, which makes the listening experience even more enjoyable.
Some parts are a bit predictable, but it doesn’t take away from the overall enjoyment.
Overall, this is a fun and entertaining listen. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys mysteries with a supernatural twist.

Great mix of mystery and the supernatural

Good read! Occasionally funny moments. I enjoyed the book: the friendship and co-operation between the ghosts. It was nice to have an imaginative look at what a ghost’s afterlife is like. The suspense was maintained till the end; however, more should have been written on the motive behind the killings. The narration was good, but I was sometimes confused about which character was speaking at times.

Dead but quite sure he was murdered

The Ghost Detectives by Charles Townsend is a gripping twist on the typical murder mystery because the investigation only truly begins after the protagonist, Charlie Benson, dies. Waking up as a spirit, Charlie finds himself caught between two worlds: he must identify his own killer while protecting the only detective who believes his death was foul play. The stakes are raised by a terrifying supernatural villain named Malice, a "soul-eater" who stalks the dead. Charlie is mentored by a veteran ghost named Lizzie, who helps him navigate this new existence and learn how to use his background in stage magic to influence the physical world. It is a fascinating blend of a survival thriller and a classic "whodunnit" that explores the raw, uncomfortable reality of watching your loved ones move on without you.

Murder, Magic, and the Afterlife

The Ghost Detectives by Charles Townsend offers a fascinating look at a marriage falling apart from the perspective of a man who just died. Charlie Benson wakes up as a spirit only to realize his death was no accident. It is heartbreaking but gripping to watch him witness the cold reality of his widow’s life, including her affair with a man he thought was a friend. The story weaves a complicated web of infidelity and greed among the dinner guests, making you realize that everyone close to Charlie had a motive to see him gone. The emotional weight of these betrayals is balanced by the clever way Charlie uses his skills as an amateur magician to influence the physical world and leave clues for the police.

Betrayal and Magic in the Afterlife

Charles Townsend’s The Ghost Detectives delivers a shocking twist by weaving a medical serial killer into a world where death is only the beginning of a complex social hierarchy. I was fascinated by the expansion of the ghost community in Colchester and the "Ghost Council," which brilliantly illustrates the collective power spirits can wield, like the "spook" used to project bone-chilling cold. The book’s standout innovation is Malice, a predator who violates the soul's autonomy by forcing ghosts into "the Light" before they are ready, turning a traditionally peaceful concept into a terrifying threat. Charlie’s use of his magician’s persona and his tactical navigation of the Enderby home as a "battlefield" make for a visually striking and high-stakes supernatural mystery.
While the "salted fish and chips" murder method was an ingenious display of chemistry, the plot’s execution felt a bit uneven. The initial medical negligence that kicks off the story felt overly forced, and I was disappointed by the lack of closure for Charlie’s son, Edward, which left an unnecessary sense of abandonment. Furthermore, the Ghost Council and the faceless rebel ghosts could have used more development to feel like a grounded part of the world rather than mere plot devices. Despite these flaws, the creative intersection of the physical and incorporeal—like trying to trap a ghost in a commercial freezer—makes for a unique and highly engaging read that breathes fresh life into the genre.
