John Milton was just passing through.

But when a chance glimpse of an old friend drags him off course, he finds himself in Clearwater Springs—a forgotten town poisoned by corporate greed and held hostage by fear.

Caterina Moreno was supposed to disappear. Years ago, Milton risked everything to help her escape Mexico and a cartel death sentence. Now she's resurfaced under a new name, fighting a different kind of war. She's taking on the powerful fracking company that's been making people sick and silencing anyone who dares speak out.

Milton offers protection from the shadows. But danger is circling. The deeper Caterina digs, the more violent the pushback becomes—and far beyond the reach of corporate lawyers, someone else is watching. Someone sent to finish what was started years ago.

To save a woman who refuses to run, Milton will have to face a threat that's been stalking her for years—and make a stand in a town where justice has long since been buried.

Another good book in the series. I liked John better when he was meaner. He seems a too forgiving.

John’s attitude

I love the John Milton series and have listened to all the previous books. Unfortunately, this one fell short for the same reason the last one fell short...the narration. Usually the narrator is fantastic. He can do almost any accent. His downfall is the American Redneck. This story takes place in Texas. I grew up in Oklahoma and have NEVER heard a worse Texas accent in my life. It almost made me stop listening. The same thing happened in the previous book, "The Hanging Tree ", where he annihilated the Kentucky accents. Please, Mark Dawson, get the heck out of the Redneck phase. Also, John Milton is getting too soft. The stories are losing their edge.

Narration is wack...

I'll excuse those who give these latest books the regular Dawson high fives, but only because of David Thorpe's astonishing narrative ability to mimic virtually any language, accent, young or old anywhere on the planet. That alone is enough to keep the reader engaged. But these recent John Milton releases lead me to believe Mark Dawson must be attempting the hiring at least one ghost writer. In this one, not only is there zero action early on, we don't even get to meet the woman who Milton is eventually going to once again protect until Chapter 15, with everything up to that point being nothing but complete, boring, uninteresting fluff . Totally inexplicable. Let's get it back together, Mark.

"All Thriller, No Filler" - Really??

I've listened to every book in the John Milton series available on Audible, but had to stop listening to this one because the Texas Accent was painful to hear and overshadowed the story. I was born and raised in Texas and have many relatives fron different areas of the state, so I've heard many variations of heavy southern accents. I have heard nothing like what is in Clearwater. Tremendously disappointed. I don't have time to read books so I will miss this one. I've moved on to another in this series based in England. Accents are completely understandable to this Texan!

Horrific Texas Accent - Could Not Understand MANY Words
