A Powerful Story About One of History’s Fiercest Queens

Listening to Throne of Lions honestly made the story feel even more alive. The narration carried a strong emotional intensity that matched the strength and intelligence of Queen Njinga throughout the book. I already knew a little about her history before listening, but this story gave much more depth to the political struggles, warfare, betrayals, and leadership challenges she faced while defending her people. The combination of historical detail and dramatic storytelling kept me engaged during long listening sessions.

The scenes involving negotiations with the Portuguese and the constant pressure surrounding power and survival were especially compelling. I also appreciate how Njinga is showed as fierce and deeply human instead of turning her into an untouchable legend. Her strategic thinking, emotional losses, and determination made her feel real in a way many historical characters do not. The narrator did an excellent job differentiating voices and maintaining tension during battle scenes and royal confrontations.

This book made me want to research more of the history afterward. There are moments of brutality and political darkness because the time period itself was harsh but those elements never felt unnecessary. The pace stayed strong and I rarely found my attention drifting. Anyone interested in African history, powerful female rulers or immersive historical fiction would probably enjoy this.

Amazing story of a queen and her kingdom

I really enjoyed this story! This tells the story of An-Jinga who becomes queen of her people after her brother dies. She forms allies with another ruler to defeat the Portuguese. The only thing I did not like is that the audiobook was told by AI and I prefer human narrators.
