He didn’t log in to be a Hero, or go on a grand adventure. He logged in to survive.

On the brink of death, a burned-out late-thirty-something is offered one last chance at life through experimental early access to a full-dive VRMMO. The price is simple: he can’t log out. When the system sends him into the world years before launch, he becomes something no developer planned for: a seemingly permanent inhabitant, living inside the game long before players arrive.

While future adventurers dream of fame and leaderboards, he chooses a quieter path. He claims land in the mountains, learns the patient craft of blacksmithing, mines deep veins of ore, and finally builds a life with his hands instead of slowly dying behind a desk.

For a long while, the world is his alone. He carves out the beginnings of a life for himself, begrudgingly makes a few friends, and finds a purpose.

Then players begin to appear. To the first of their number, he’s just a strange NPC with skills that shouldn’t exist yet. He doesn’t correct them. He would very much like to just be left alone.

Unfortunately, the world has other plans.

So I haven't actually finished the book yet, but this is a story I've been looking for for a long time. I haven't run across many mining/blacksmithing stories. Which are subjects I enjoy immensely. The narrator does a great job. However.. the reason I'm writing this review so early is one thing thats bothering about the story. It's been like a itch in my brain I can't get over. Spoilers ahead.

The issue I have is the death penalty is this "game" world. As someone who had played multiple MMOS including 20 years in WoW.... if I spend hours and hours grinding gear and loot, there is no way I'm playing a game where you lose all your gear, all your inventory, and all your money when you die. That is an egregious death penalty. I don't know if there are Mmos irl with this strong of a penalty but it bothered me enough in this story that I decided to leave this review in hopes that this mechanic is either explained or somehow justified in future books because thats insane. This is solely my view point and it doesnt ruin the book overall but I can't imagine myself dedicating hundreds of hours grinding gear and loot in a game where a death cab lose you everything. even more so with the mention that other players can pick it up while you're being revived or are trying to get back while being completely stripped naked.
Overall this book was amazing. I absolutely need more and hope the author has plenty more planned for this series. I also hope they write very quickly as I need more now. Especially of Teddy 🤣 he had me rolling multiple times.

Absolutely fantastic.
