A Well Crafted Prequel

the setup…
Harper Richie is an aspiring chef living in London who is toiling away as a dishwasher while waiting for her break. She and her best friend Phoenix Hamilton are out on the dance floor at a nightclub when James Hamilton shows up. He’s Phoenix’s oldest over protective brother (she has five). He’s not liking the attention they’re getting and decides it’s time for them to go home. There’s no mistaking the pull between him and Harper and after dropping Phoenix at home, James decides to spend more time with her, all the while trying to resist the attraction. He’s a decade older and currently still serving as a Marine.

the heart of the story…
It comes down to Harper trying to convince James that their age difference shouldn’t matter and they should explore a relationship. James is having none of it no matter how difficult it is to keep her at arms length when deep down, he’s equally drawn to her.

the narration…
Give Shane East & Evelyn Rose all the stars for a great performance! I could listen to him all day and she was Harper inside and out. They were wonderful storytellers.

the bottom line…
This is the prequel to the series and it accomplished its mission in setting up whatever comes next for Harper and James. I am sufficiently intrigued to explore their futures as they both were well crafted enough in this short story to make me care. 3.5 stars

Good novella

This novella is short and fast paced, so I was able to listen to it in one sitting. The duet narration was fantastic, it keeps the tension high, and does a great job setting up the story for The Unwilling Bride. The cliffhanger had me immediately wanting the next book! 💕 (Summer 2026)

Wow! Such chemistry

What a fantastic start to a series.
This is the prequel to The Unwilling Bride and is the first encounter between Harper and James and the evening that changes their lives.
Home from an assignment, James a disillusioned Marine with a dark past meets his sister’s gorgeous best friend Harper.
There is an instant connection between them both with chemistry that’s off the charts.
Nothing can come of it though due to Harper’s friendship with his sister.
The push and pull between the two over the time they have together that night, has me eagerly awaiting their full story.
A really great read.
I listened to the audiobook of this story which was narrated in duet by Shane East and Evelyn Rose.
Shane’s performance is amazing as he portrays James perfectly and Evelyn’s performance is beautiful playing Harper’s role.
I thoroughly enjoyed this short story and my time listening along.
Thank you L Steele for the opportunity to read and listen to this entertaining prequel.

Desperate Little Women

It is slightly intriguing and I like the depth and descriptions in their dialogue. But desperate women begging for the scraps of men who don't want them is a turn off. we'll see if I continue.
