Delightful Read

I admit it. I am not a fan of dual timelines. I have read and loved every book in this series, but this made me hesitate. Oh, how wrong I was. This 13th book in the series is exceptional. The dual timeline (1666 and 1925) is so well written, and it is quite the Goldilocks excursion, neither too short nor too long. It accomplished its purpose in the story and provided some wonderful context and motivations, not to mention some historical insights. Yes, I took a little dive into the history of King Charles II and his Queen, Catherine of Braganza. I dare any discerning reader of historical mysteries not to do so.

So, how is a previously unknown historical manuscript (1666) so much of a danger to current day (1925) reputations and careers that it leads to murder and theft, even endangering Kitty's life several times over? The answer begins several centuries in the past with political intrigue during the reign of Charles II and his Portuguese born queen and culminates with the discovery of the manuscript in 1925 by a rather indiscreet book dealer.

Magda Alexander does a superb job of weaving events, fact and fiction, three centuries apart into a captivating story of origins, friendship, loyalty, treason, and murder. Never fear, all of our favorite characters are here, and the banter does not disappoint; though you have to wait for it just a bit.

As always, and possibly even more so with this book, I suggest you begin at the beginning, with the first book in the series, and read sequentially in order to fully appreciate the artistry of this book; but whether you do that or just jump into Book 13, I think you will enjoy the adventures of Kitty and her investigative team.

You may also enjoy the cast of characters listed at the end of the book. As a special treat to audiobook readers, each character is identified in his or her own unique voice from the story.

Kim Bretton does her usual first-rate job of voicing these characters and bringing each one to life; thus the 5 stars for performance.

Riveting

I had to do a deep dive into 17th century English history after we finished listening to this. Another beautifully woven mystery they kept us rapt with wonder. The only thing I don’t remember being resolved was who hit Kitty and how she was found and ended up in hospital:) I want to know!

Won’t continue with this series

I listen to the kitty Worthington series in part because I like the setting of the 1920s. There are several series that I listen to in that setting.

However, this book takes these familiar characters and then spends 2/3 of the book in the 17th century, not a time period in which I’m interested, If this is the direction this series is going, then I’m out. Using a cheap Newhart-esque literary trope as a way to write a one off book for a moment in time in which the author some knowledge, just seems a little manipulative to me.

WHAT A WONDERFUL SERIES!!

Loved everything about this series. The narrator was so good, I completely forgot the voices were from one person! (Except for the southern American accents from past books. May need to practice those 😘). The storylines were gripping and descriptions delicious!

HATE the whole time travel theme

I like this series because of the characters and the setting. The whole time travel theme is completely off-putting, as I cannot overlook all the unexplained inconsistencies, let alone the impossibility of the premise. If you want to stick with the characters and the time frame you already like, give this one a miss.
