Early death flags avoided. Time to build an empire.

With a half-frozen fortress, a vampire sister who hits like a natural disaster, and a blood-drinking dryad fertilizing his fields, I have everything I need to found a kingdom.

All I have to do is outmaneuver a werewolf plague, keep a wind mage addicted to my blood-spiked drugs, and survive a royal court full of nobles who smile while they plot my execution.

I've played this game. I know how every major event is supposed to go.

The problem? I've already changed too much.

I did not finish this book. To me the author threw away too much of the restrictions and logic the main character was using to be an interesting character. I think in the first volume he took great efforts to redefine what a being a vampire meant and elevate himself and his standards above the behavior of his kin.

So to see the main character embrace that path to power despite hating and avoiding it so much in volume 1 was disappointing. He also clearly recognizes and acknowledges he is backsliding into the worst vampiric tendencies of laziness and apathy. Then he just shrugs and seems to say, “I’m sure it’s fine. I’ll worry about it later.”

I hope the author was building up to him realizing the mistake he has made and moving towards a middle ground. I couldn’t stand how he treated his allies and tolerated his enemies long enough to find out.

Did not like the direction the author took things

The book did great as a second book of the series. Narration was great and the writer kept a fantastic pace. Excited for the third book!

Great

There’s a few things I really don’t get. First of all I don’t get why he’s living at the dukedom when he went through the trouble to become a teacher at the magic tower?! He could have avoided some really stupid situations and maybe not resorted to blood magic and losing his sanity. Being a man is hard enough without uncontrollable bloodlust. If you’re going to be a villain you need the power to back it up but unfortunately he’s a villain with no real power! It’s just sad.

Then there’s the interpretation of the kinesis’s. Like Airokinesis being “swooshing air with his mental hands.” It’s stupid. Those kinesis manipulate their element directly using the mind. He has Omnikinesis! The most powerful and all encompassing mental power and the author makes it the weakest of all magic.

Didn’t like

at the time of the review i haven't finished the book. i plan to, however the pacing of conflict resolution is more forced with many situations seeming like they were accelerated instead of the buildup i enjoyed from the first book. the shift in characters seem more sudden and drastic compared to how shifts would occur from the first book.

writing is disjointed now
