A narrator attends the funeral of an old friend, a Veteran who had been living on the streets and is shaken to his core when he realizes he is the only person present. When he is handed the folded flag from the coffin, the weight of it becomes symbolic, forcing him to confront a haunting truth: his own life could have easily followed the same lonely path. This moment sparks a deep internal reckoning, compelling him to revisit his past, beginning with his earliest memory, in search of the pivotal choices that shaped his journey, especially the missteps and misguided career decisions.

What unfolds is a deeply reflective, often humorous, yet unflinchingly honest narrative. The narrator traces his transformation from a shy, devout altar boy with dreams of becoming a priest into a polished but morally conflicted salesman. Along the way, he wrestles with the uncomfortable realization that success in his profession often demands compromising his conscience. His story is rich with sharp observations, vivid analogies, and moments of both triumph and failure that feel equally profound.

Each chapter, save for two, opens with his original poetry, setting a reflective tone. He shares his creative pursuits, including an imaginative comic strip centered on inanimate objects, a heartfelt and witty newspaper column, and his most ambitious project an acoustic rock opera that introduces a unique lyrical concept known as WHISLs, or words hidden in song lyrics.

The narrative also delves into his personal life love, heartbreak, and the ups and downs of raising two daughters, including the strain of seeing one serve in a war zone. It also offers an unfiltered look at his years in the automobile industry, exposing the realities behind big-city dealerships.

In the final chapter, the narrator confronts his descent into suicidal thoughts, uncovering how he reached that point and the realization that saved him, bringing the story to a powerful and hopeful close.
