“I was taught to convert Catholics—then I became one.”

Ellie Hiller grew up in the heart of the Protestant Bible Belt, immersed in a faith she believed was unshakable. Her faith shaped everything—her worldview, her family, her friendships, her marriage. Raised in the Church of Christ yet educated K-12th grade at the flagship school of the Presbyterian Church in America, Ellie lived within two traditions divided on many points of doctrine but united in one conviction: Catholicism had perverted the simple, saving Gospel and turned it into “traditions of men.”

Over time, however, subtle contradictions between the two traditions began to emerge. Tensions between what she was taught at home and what she learned at school unsettled her, taking root in her mind and refusing to let go. Where had these two traditions split, and why? Which should she believe when both were reading the same Bible?

As an athlete, those theological tensions became physical. Ellie wrestled with the disconnect between a faith largely lived in the mind and a life powerfully experienced through the body. Why was the body—through which she encountered so much of God’s world—so often treated as secondary in the spiritual life? Where did the tangible and the incarnational belong in worship?

Confident she would find these answers in her Protestant tradition, she set out to uncover a biblical theology of the body. But when her husband of four years told her he wanted to become Catholic, her unshakeable faith began to crumble, and her worldview unraveled. In her grief and desperation to stop his conversion, God began a work in her heart—using her very questions about the place of the body in His plan for salvation to lead her toward a sacramental faith.

Her story is one of struggle and surrender–an unlikely journey that led her, step by step, into the arms of the Church she once sought to save others from.

This is a great book for someone Catholic curious that is respectful and charitable towards Protestantism and Evangelicalism. Ellie tells her story in a way that I think many non-Catholic Christians would find relatable.
An interesting angle to her story is how heavily she was involved in CrossFit and how she desired to understand the theology of the body and how it connects to Christianity beyond the idea that, “physical training is of some value.”
Your athletes or health conscious individuals will probably enjoy hearing her story and how she weaves her training into the narrative.

Beautiful conversion story

This was a great book. It is read by AI, which was a little different, but it did not deter me. It is a modern Rome Sweet Home. Beautiful story Ellie, thank you for writing it. This has given me a lot to think about.

Ellie Hiller's story of finding her way home to the Catholic faith is one of the most uplifting l have ever read/listened to. She spares her emotions not a jot with a brutally honest telling of the many lows in her personal and spiritual life in pursuit of and journey to the final and beautiful place she had been seeking, often without realising she had always been seeking her real spiritual home in the Catholic Church. It is a wonderfully written study in the truth of the Catholic faith which makes me, a cradle Catholic, reappraise and more deeply appreciate the faith l too frequently take for granted. May God bless her, her husband Sean and her father in their continuing journey within their newly refound faith.

Faith and life affirming

"To Whom Shall I Go" is a must-read and an absolute essential for any conversion book list. I couldn’t put it down. It is destined to become a classic, right on par with "Rome Sweet Home" and "Crossing the Tiber."
