Bloomsbury presents Conjured by Sarah Beth Durst, read by Holly Fielding

Eve has a new home, a new face, and a new name—but no memories of her past. She’s been told that she's in a witness protection program. That she escaped a dangerous magic-wielding serial killer who still hunts her. The only thing she knows for sure is that there is something horrifying in her memories the people hiding her want to access—and there is nothing they won’t say—or do—to her to get her to remember.

At night she dreams of a tattered carnival tent and buttons being sewn into her skin. But during the day, she shelves books at the local library, trying to not let anyone know that she can do things—things like change the color of her eyes or walk through walls. When she does use her strange powers, she blacks out and is drawn into terrifying visions, returning to find that days or weeks have passed—and she’s lost all short-term memories. Eve must find out who and what she really is before the killer finds her—but the truth may be more dangerous than anyone could have ever imagined.©2013 Audible, Inc. (P)2014 Audible, Inc.

Critic reviews

Durst excels at describing grotesque violence and gorgeous magical transformations alike, painting a touching portrait of first love against a backdrop of Twilight Zone–type terrors.Patient readers will respond to this slow thriller about a girl with memory loss and magical powers, and a murderer on the loose.
An unusual blend of magical worlds, psychological thriller, and teen romance.
With strong folklore elements, a striking setting, and thoroughly imagined characters, Durst has woven a story that does not shy from the bawdy, violent, or pragmatic realities of life.
A fast-paced, thrilling adventure. . .the highly descriptive writing forms intense visuals for the reader so that characters, animals, and locations feel rich and realistic.
Combining a sense of humor with dark appeal of supernatural romance, this book is funny, scary and thought provoking all at once...Even jaded fans of the supernatural find fun in this one.
Twisty, absorbing and satisfying
Durst flawlessly weaves together romance, adventure, and a modern sensibility to create a highly inventive and suspenseful story of a girl on the cusp of adulthood.

I really liked the twists in this story. The writing made me feel unsure or wary of the other characters motives just like the main character felt.

GOOD STORY.. THOUGH WAY TOO SLOW LEADING. I DIDN'T FEEL IT REALLY BECAME INTERESTING UNTIL AROUND 70%. SARAH BETH DURST IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS, WITH HER SPELLSHOP SERIES TOPPING MY LIST. AT FIRST I WASN'T GOING TO READ IT DUE TO A SERIAL KILLER BEING IN THE DESCRIPTION, BUT I DECIDED TO GET FAMILIAR WITH MORE OF HER WORK THAN JUST HER COZIES. SHE DIDN'T DISAPPOINT AS FAR AS HER MAGICAL WORLD BUILDING & CHARACTERS-- I JUST DON'T CARE FOR THE UNDERLYING THRILLER ASPECT. IF THAT'S WHAT YOU LIKE, YOU'LL ENJOY THIS ONE.

PART OF MY LOWER RATING IS THE NARRATOR. SHE SOUNDED TOO COMPLETELY EMOTIONLESS ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
I UNDERSTAND THAT SHE IS PORTRAYING A CHARACTER WHO IS, AT THE CORE, A STITCHED TOGETHER DOLL WITH MAGICAL ABILITIES. PERHAPS SHE FLATTENED HER VOICE TO BETTER PORTRAY HER "UNHUMAN" FORM & THOUGHTS.... I'M NOT SURE. IT FELT EXTREMELY FLAT SOUNDING TO ME. SINCE IT IS AN AUDIBLE, WITH MORE RESOURCES AVAILABLE, THAT WAS A DISSAPOINTMENT THAT MADE ME ALMOST NOT FINISH--- HOWEVER THE STORY WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO WANT TO HEAR THE ENDING.

GREAT AUTHOR, GREAT MAGIC, NOT MY FAV STORY.
