“Even the magic is original… elves and dwarves have unique twists.” Janet, BookBub reviewer
P.C. Darkcliff genuinely is one of the best epic fantasy authors I’ve had the pleasure of reading. — Lita, Goodreads

In a land torn by savage war and dark magic, only fools dream of glory. Derrik is the biggest fool of all. He dreams of protecting the weak — to the amusement of his neighbors.

Then the monsters descend, and the laughter curdles into screams.

With death snarling at his heels, Derrik plunges into a quest no mortal should survive. Hunted by a mage who has never lost and never forgiven, he turns to an ancient elf he instinctively distrusts… and a volatile dragon whose motives he cannot guess.

His quest drives him through icy plains and blazing deserts, through realms of dwarves, mages, and warlike nomads. They all warn him of one entity, whose name they whisper like a curse.

The Balebringer. Stirring at the bottom of a frozen ocean. As he tosses in his sleep, the earth heaves and cities shatter. His awakening will unmake time and erase history — and horned Wrathlords are creeping into his realm.

Derrik must follow them into the darkness to save the world. Prepared to fight. Prepared to die. But not ready to face the truth.

The Wrathlords are suddenly fleeing the abyss in blind terror.

Yet Derrik keeps descending.

AI Ruins the story

I guess I will have to acrually read the series to see if it is just virtual voice that is keeping me from enjoying it.

V.V. is awful, story is ok...

I almost didnt choose this series since it was AI narration but it was the best AI I've heard. And the story was great! I wish all the AI narrator stories sounded this good.

Glad I listened

The author could probably use the help of a qualified editor. That said, the story was decent.

The whispersync narration wasn’t as bad as other books I’ve listened to. However, it does get old when there are clearly different voices in the text but the narrator never distinguishes them.

The author made some odd word choices for character speech - instead of “my old gal” you will hear “my aging girl.” Instead of “friend” you will often hear “pal,” or “human pal.” Instead of “my lovely” you will hear “beautiful human girl.”

I can’t really complain since it was a long listen from the Audible Plus catalog.

Decent story, weird word choices

Great story but having a human voice it would be much much better. No inflection and the narration sucks bad. Hopefully the author doesn't try to save money next time and pays a human to narrate going forward.. .its obvious at parts that they used AI which sucks bad

story is great but ai voice sucks bad
