“Follow the facts, not a podcast.”
On a dark stretch of rural road in Hampton County, South Carolina, 19-year-old Stephen Smith was found dead in the middle of the pavement.
No skid marks.
No debris.
No clear answers.
What began as a quickly labeled hit-and-run would unravel into something far more complicated—an investigation filled with contradictions, missed opportunities, and a silence that lasted nearly a decade.
In Heartbreak on Sandy Run Road, investigative journalist James Seidel digs into the records, timelines, and evidence behind one of South Carolina’s most haunting cases. New evidence was discovered, brand new interviews, and an actual eye witness to statements made the early morning Stephen was killed.
Set against the backdrop of the Murdaugh era—but grounded firmly in documented facts—this is not a story about rumor. It’s a story about evidence.
About a case that stalled.
About questions that never went away.
And about a young man whose story deserves more than speculation.
Because some cases don’t go cold.
They’re left that way.

I’m not sure what is worse: 1. AI narration with mispronunciations and reading of the descriptions of images included in the print copy. 2. The massive amount of times information is repeated. 3. The author’s clear disdain for and willingness to trash talk anyone not keen on his theory.
AI narration is hideous!

The second time the author caught my full attention is because I am "one of those who thinks I know due to watching the entire trial end to end repeatedly, followed all the podcasters including and especially MM, watched the "documentaries", read all the other books including Harpootleon's and felt like I had a solid grasp of things.
This book sheds some stunning new information and some that has been ressurected. My head is spinning all over again regarding not only Stephen Smith's death but also right back to all the Murdaughs AND the seemingly non-stop shady behavior of sooooooo many people in that area?! I was born in Detroit decades ago, and I am not sure who has more habitual criminals, this area of SC or Detroit?! So many citizens with zero reguard for ANY law. WTH
I am still processing so much in this book. I offer the author huge thanks for investing so much time, energy and resources into all of this for the right reasons and then offering this book for free?! As time permits, I hope you are able to go back and rerecord without using an AI voice narration. Her tone was pleasant but there was countless mispronunciations especially with SLED and it created distractions to the content. Last but not least, I feel like all of these "other" cases like Stephen's, Cousin Eddy's and more are all suspended until Alex's retrial is complete. My personal opinion from the sidelines is that SS's death was the hit and run version by the two hog hunters. They may not have even seen Stephen if they were both looking for hogs on the drivers side of the truck and road.
However, if there is a connection between SS's death and Maggie and Paul's death, this will become a massive, massive undertaking. Add a possible new AG and stir well.
Just when you thought you knew everything....
