The tide came in on the twelfth of December, and it brought more than Harriet expected.

A third set of remains at the Signal Tower spit — older than the Victorian bones, wearing a coastguard's uniform button and buried without ceremony or care.
And beneath all of it, older still: bronze, and pottery, and the quiet evidence of people who had stood on this coast long before anyone thought to write anything down.

By April, the finds have made Thornwick briefly famous.
An exhibition. A consultation. A committee. And a man who has been quietly managing everyone's business for thirty years found dead at the base of the tower that started it all.

Harriet Finch has three investigations now: a murder disguised as an accident, a coastguard officer who disappeared in 1819 without ever officially existing, and the slowly diminishing visits to a cottage hospital in Holt, where the person who knows this coast better than anyone alive is running out of time to tell her the rest of what he knows.
