A Story That Stays With You

I don’t write many reviews, but this one earned it. The Imperfect Hand of Fate pulled me in pretty quick and kept my attention all the way through. The characters felt like real people with real problems, and the story had enough twists to keep me wondering what was coming next without feeling far-fetched.

What I liked most was that it wasn’t just action for the sake of action. It made me think about how one decision can change the course of a person’s life and how things don’t always happen the way we expect. There were a few places where I slowed down just to take in what was happening before moving on.

The narration was solid and easy to listen to, which makes a big difference with an audiobook. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anybody who likes a good story with believable characters and plenty to keep you interested. It’s well worth the listen.

A Great Listen

The narrator is fantastic! He brings this otherwise excellent story to life. This is definitely a five-star listening experience.

DID COLD WAR INTRIGUE INDEED INFILTRATE A SMALL SOUTHERN GEORGIA TOWN DURING THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS?

I absolutely love and recommend Wade Monk’s debut novel, The Imperfect Hand of Fate. I read the paperback when it was first published and loved it, but found the audible version even more delightful. Dual stories unfold in parallel time frames which merge perfectly in a climactic ending.

The main story reveals the Hand family’s dysfunctional dynamics. Young teenage Haskell is the high school football star and Junior class President whose efforts to enhance the senior class graduation land him hilariously in community service working the town library desk every Saturday for six months. Haskell’ twin brother, Elliot, sits in stark contrast. He was permanently disabled at birth and left wheel chair bound, relying upon his strong intellect to survive. There was always a wedge separating the boys and when Elliot’s unwise decision to wheel himself to the lake on Hand farm results in the accidental drowning of their mom while saving Elliot, the split seems permanent.

The parallel story involves Daryl, a backwoods Louisiana boy captured during the Korean War and sent off to Russia’s Coca Cola city where his marriage to a beautiful Russian operative and the birth of a daughter is used to coerce him to assume an assignment in Haskell’s hometown of Desoto GA, not far from numerous strategic military bases.

The stories merge when Haskell becomes suspicious of Daryl’s daily trips to the Desoto library to check out the Atlanta Journal classified ads for cars for sale. Over time, Haskell and his friends become suspicious that Daryl is a spy of some sort. After a heartfelt, sobbing, guilt-ridden apology from Elliot, the now-motherless brothers make up, and Elliot determines that the ads are being used to send coded messages from his wife to Daryl. This leads the boys to uncovering a suitcase bomb in Daryl’s garage that then leads to an explosive, climactic ending to the story.

Wade Monk masterfully weaves together the tragic coming-of-age story of two brothers with a generously researched Cold War nuclear spy operation. It is so well done that I couldn’t help but wonder following the epilogue which takes us thirty years post events, if the fantastic story might actually have some truth to it.

Kudos go out as well to the audible narrator, Mr. Haugen, who did a masterful job interspersing the multiple voices and accents into Wade’s great story. You will love this book and story!!

I was hooked from the beginning

Well-written engaging story, and an excellent choice for audio. Haskell is a high school student during the Cold War who discovers something (someone) suspicious in his small town, and Daryl is a good man in the wrong environment for the right reasons.

I wouldn’t say I’m the typical audience for this book, and I docked a star because I would have liked to see a bit more from the end, but I think it was a great book that had me hooked from the beginning. I’ve already recommended it to others!
