Let me start by telling you something most men’s books won’t say. I don’t have it all figured out.

“I’ve been doing healing work for over thirty years—and more recently, men’s work. I’ve been sitting across from men who are quietly falling apart, holding space in circles where grown men cry for the first time in decades, leading retreats in the mountains of New Mexico and Upstate New York where something cracks open in a man that he didn’t even know was sealed shut. And after all of it, I can tell you with complete honesty: this work never ends. Not for the men I sit with. Not for me. That’s not a warning. That’s an invitation. Because the men who come to me aren’t broken.

They’re not failures. They’re not weak. They’re men who can feel—even if they can’t quite name it—that there is more to this life than what they’ve been living. More than the job, the role, the performance. More than the version of themselves they put on every morning like a uniform. They sense it. And they’re right. This book is for those men. It doesn’t matter if you’re twenty-five or seventy-five. It doesn’t matter if you’ve done a decade of therapy or never once talked about your feelings out loud. If something in you said yes when you picked this up—that’s enough. That’s the only qualification you need.

*As a side note, some of the men reading the rough draft asked if their wives and partners could listen to the book and I realized this book may have benefits for a wider audience than I thought.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing many of the men who have participated in David’s work, and I’ve watched their lives, change and remarkable ways. The healing they found didn’t stay within the circle it ripped outward into their relationships, their families, and everyone fortunate enough to know them. I can’t help but wish every man could experience this journey, and every woman could be surrounded by men who have done this depth of inner work.

The easily digestible content in this book goes down smooth with the authors steady cadence and warm inflection. On repeated listens new truths are revealed. Dare I say listening to this book bordered on the mystical for me.

In 1776 Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet. It was short, accessible and persuasive. It was a catalyst for a revolution. It was called Common Sense.

I believe David Elliott’s Men’s Work is a modern-day Common Sense for men. It is a guide for how men can free themselves of the trauma and toxicity many of us carry. It is a call to action that will bring healing into the male body through brotherhood and the breath.

I have been in men’s circles for more than 15 years and have read countless books on men’s work, but this is the first book
that plainly, directly and poignantly tells us men how we can heal ourselves, right now! The soul resonating exercises at the end of each chapter makes that healing immediately available.

This small book IS revolutionary. It tells us men it is okay to exhale and that there is a vibrant and expressive life waiting for us on the other side of resistance.

The world needs a book like this now. It is time the clarity and vulnerability David Elliott provides in this short yet potent work becomes “common sense” for men everywhere going forward.

Please, buy this book. Then, sign-up for one of David’s retreats or trainings. I have been attending them for years and they are life-changing.

This is a book for women who have compassion for the male condition and who are curious how men see the healing work they are doing. I was especially encouraged by the “Come Down from Your Head” chapter. I, too, have been doing this work of getting into my body to release stuck energy. The chapter that most lit me up was “The Sacred Marriage: Inner Masculine and Feminine.” I’m excited that men are doing this same work that my women’s circle is doing. This is the revolution I’m committed to. May it bring transformation at the deepest levels so that, together, we can all uplevel from surviving to thriving to flourishing.
