Publisher's summary

Skylar is used to the way people think of him as frightening, mean, and dangerous. Snakes are not the most popular shifters around and the fact he grew up wild doesn't help. He knows the way he's chosen to live alone in the woods only makes things worse, but he didn't think it meant people thought him capable of killing a couple of wolf puppies.

Determined to find the real monster who left them to die, Skylar calls up the only wolf he knows, a man he always wished would see him as more than a snake....

Warm

Fast reading short story full story warmth with a brief erotic interlude. I particularly enjoyed the confrontation with the parents. Recommended.

Nice, sweet short story

Would you consider the audio edition of Backwoods Asylum to be better than the print version?

I own the ebook and that was the first book by Megan Derr that I ever bought and which led to me buying all her other titles. I bought the audiobook because I liked the ebook. Is it better? I'd say it's about even.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how the story had a fairytale-like element to it. It has a contemporary setting but the characters are shifters. The narrative is easy to listen to and follow, would probably be great to listen to when you're just settling into bed.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Skylar's protectiveness kicked-in because of the puppies being in distress.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some parts of it made me go 'awwwwwwwwww' just because of the sheer adorableness of the puppies and Skylar.

Kind of dumb

I’ve really enjoyed most of Derr’s books and was very willing to give this a try. It was just kind of cringy to read. Too predictable, too trite.

Absolute Favorite Comfort Read

Love this story so hard. Audible version is a must have, because the narrator somehow makes a wonderful story even better.

Love Paul Morey's accent as Skylar...

....that sweet southern twang of male strength and kindness was charming. The entire story was a bit fluffy but so dang on charming and endearing. I was left smiling, my heart all beaming in happiness.lol

What a great idea to create a shifter snake and werewolf romance. I wish the story had been longer because I've never come across a shifter snakes story. Skylar's history was interesting to me and I wanted more of it. I loved the inter-species romance. And, I loved when Hansel and Gretel attacked Skylar's love interest pants leg, it was adorable. They were protecting their daddy snake, too cute!

Seemed to be missing parts

Not bad, I'm not going to return it or anything. The concept of a Snake-Shifter is original and cool. There's an "explanation-gap," so to speak, where too much that's revealed at the end was never alluded to anytime earlier. The following IS NOT a spoiler because it doesn't happen in the story, it just feels similar to other tropes: it's almost akin in feeling to a murder mystery that introduces the villain in the last couple of pages for the first time. I do believe I'm coming off here being overly critical because it's not a plot contradiction or anything and I liked the book. It's just that the ending had a lot of summary about things that were never mentioned in the story so it felt kind of back-filled and stilted. It's a short book for an interesting story so some things have to be glossed over but an extra 15 minutes could have solved all my "complaints." I do put complaints in quotes because I do like the book; I guess this is just an FYI. I hope someone finds this rambling review helpful.

Fast paced fun read!

Where does Backwoods Asylum rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Right at the top. I'll definitely listen to this one over and over again, just too much fun.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Backwoods Asylum?

The surprise that Brady has for Skylar at the end.

What about Paul Morey’s performance did you like?

EVERYTHING! Seriously , this man could just sit and read the phone book out loud and I'd be entranced.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The way the pups saw Skylar for who he really was, no judgement.

Any additional comments?

Skylar is a snake shifter and a loner by nature. He lives alone and secluded in the woods, it’s the way he prefers it. But his self imposed seclusion is about to abruptly end when he wakes one night to the soft cries of a couple wolf shifter pups. Skylar reaches out for help from the only wolf shifter he knows, Brady.

Skylar and Brady have always been uneasy around each other, each thinking the other disliked him, when in fact it was a mutual attraction that made them unsteady. Forced into close quarters while Brady tries to figure out why the pups were dumped off at Skylars pond, presumably so the nasty snake shifter would have them as a midnight snack, the two finally get to see each other for who they really are.

This was just a fast paced, fun read with a little bit of mystery and suspense. It’s difficult to write too much about this short, as I don’t want to give everything away. Derr has a knack for writing these short stories that contain more content than a lot of full length novels. Her characters are always three dimensional and her stories very vivid. Add to that the sultry voice of Paul Morey as he gives her words and characters a voice and the end result is a fantastic audible that will make the time fly by.
