Publisher's summary

Audie Award Winner • Earphones Award Winner • Best of 2016 Science Fiction Audiobook

Battlefield Earth is an enormous epic of adventure set in the year 3000, when the future survival of what's left of the human race is at stake. When Jonnie Goodboy Tyler decides to venture out of the small and dwindling community of humans barely surviving in their Rocky Mountain retreat, he has no thought of challenging the order that for a thousand years has held the earth prisoner to the oppressive alien race of the Psychlos.

The Psychlos and their vast intergalactic mining corporation have dominated and exploited all known galaxies for centuries, ruthlessly destroying races who dare to resist. How one man - with the aid of a few surviving Scotsmen—tackles the greatest malignant power in the universe makes for a sprawling adventure of thrilling heroics, full of dangerous underground work, interplanetary wars, intergalactic financial intrigue, monster races, and complex political manipulation spread across a vast canvas of epic scale.

It's like listening to a movie!

What made the experience of listening to Battlefield Earth the most enjoyable?

The production quality of this audiobook is like nothing I have ever listened to. I have listened to other multi-cast performances with a few actors, but this was something else. Every character was unique, the sound effects were spot on, it really was an immersive experience. I sometimes have problem with my mind wandering while listening to audiobooks, but with this, I really felt IN the story.

What other book might you compare Battlefield Earth to and why?

In a way, it is relatable to a lot of the dystopian books prevalent today like the Hunger Games, Maze Runner, etc. Except it isn't geared towards the YA market and the fight for freedom isn't a contrived game, but a real fight against alien conquerors.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

I really liked Terl. Char was a smaller character, but I loved the actor's performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is way too long to listen to in one sitting, but I wanted to keep listening.

Amazing!

There is a full cast with sound effects and, from time-to-time, background music to make listening to this book a pleasure. The book itself is beautifully written with a sweepingly detailed plot. There is suspense, drama, romance, and action (lots of action). The action encompasses, quite literally, world shaking consequences. Amazing book!

Still my favorite book

Have read this book twice and now listened to it.

The story is great and for 90% of the performance it is very good. The parts I didn't like were how they treated the villains. Throughout, they make them sound stupid or childish or naive. Terl was one of the smartest Cyclos on a planet of 400Billion, but they played him like he was below average intelligence and singularly focused. That is probably a fault of Hubbard as well, but the actors could have made this better.

Brown Limper was played in a whinny voice that no one would have followed in the story. I think that really betrayed what Hubbard was after. Brown was sly, and not stupid. He was misguided and took an evil path. This was the worst performance in the story, which is a shame.

Had Brown Limper and Terl been played better it would be 5 star for everything, but these two performances really hurt the audio version.

it is truly sad he did not continue writing in this field.
the narrators really brought the story to life.
wish more audible books we're done in this way.

it was so good I hated it

I hated this audiobook because I couldn't put it down. I lost sleep, missed work and didn't do any of the things I was supposed to until I could finish it. it should be against the law to make something this good.

Like a movie!

Wow, I listened to quite some audiobooks but never heard anything like this. All the voices, sounds, makes it's like a full movie inside your head. Very nice.
Love the story, heroism, love, intrigue, crime, all in this major sci-fi setting. Keeps capturing your attention the full length of the story.

I love that this story makes sense

I could not stop listening. What an array of moves in the story! And for me important: it makes sense. No Supermen or ghosts involved.
A delight from first minute to last.

A Longtime Favorite

I typically do not like a multicast recording for audio books, and this is definitely that. However I did enjoy it and found that it was very well done. The addition of background noises and voices was not disruptive to the store being told. And while there were some places the music seemed excessive, overall this was a fantastic production of a story I have enjoyed several times since the mid-80s
