Publisher's summary

In Beat the Devil, addict, alcoholic and best-selling Kindle Singles author Mishka Shubaly returns to battle his ultimate demon: his obsession with rock 'n' roll. Over three decades, his affliction has spawned immeasurable chaos and destruction (and, yes, maybe some debauched good times). While his rivals have graced the covers of Spin and Rolling Stone, Shubaly's projects have always flamed out in the 11th hour. At 36, sober and stable, Shubaly is poised to finally achieve the rock 'n' roll glory he has lusted after for years...or walk away from his lifelong dream forever.

Shubaly spares no gory detail in this autopsy of his wasted years and Beat The Devil is rife with anonymous sex, casual drug abuse and behind-the-scenes desperation borne out of chasing an unattainable dream. Everything that has endeared Shubaly to his readers is here: his resistance to common sense, his inability to accept defeat, his probing intellect, and his heart.

Mishka Shubaly is Amazon's most frequently published Kindle Singles author with a string of four best sellers to his name. His first-hand account of a disaster at sea, “Shipwrecked,” rescued him from anonymity. “The Long Run,” a mini-memoir detailing Shubaly's transition from drunk-and-drugged gutter dweller to sober ultra-marathoner was a flyaway smash. He continued his hot streak with “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” an incredible-but-true tale of online love gone awry, and “Bachelor Number One,” which chronicled Shubaly's induction into the dark world of reality TV.

You'll forget you're not actually ffriends

Mishka Shubably is one of those kind of guys. The rare ones who give you the brutal honesty, admit their mistakes, and will make you laugh with him. Because even if you say 'oh my god, I can't believe you did that' in every chapter, it's not mean laughing at him, more awe inspiring he's here to tell the tale. Not everyone was destined to be the best boys and girls; some of us serve as the examples your parents warned you about. He's got that gravelly kind of Lanegan voice that will hypnotize you into being late for work, because you spent the morning in the bathroom listening & holding the floor while he was talking. There's enough grit to it to be like a familiar comfort of the eternal fuck ups, but without gnawing on a grudge for being around the scene and not becoming a famous rock star, or doing the peacock strut. Because we all know if what was most people's fantasy happened to us it would also kill us. A tale of caution and redemption about a guy who stopped drinking, but still kept those asshole personality traits we thrive off of while giving the world the finger. And if Dark Mark approved than you already know to buckle up because it's going to be a hell of a ride.

An honest man

I’d give this ten stars if I could. I’m a firm believer that we don’t find art. Art finds us. This is a prime example. I just let this book fuel me on my first 200 miles of a 1900 trip into the next chapter of my life. Art found me.

I randomly went to a Beat The Devil show back in 2006 in Columbus. It was the same show Mishka mentioned in this book. I immediately fell in love with Shilpa. My 12 year old niece is larger in stature than her, but Shilpa’s voice could reach the gods and her stage presence borders on a tent revival. She was a force of nature.

Years later I discovered Mishka’s kindle singles and bought his book, I SWEAR I’LL MAKE UP TO YOU. I was 4 years in a 12 year odyssey (still going) and drove down from Cleveland on a week night to catch him at the Rumba Cafe with Lou Poster and Lydia Loveless. It was a pretty epic set.

I’m Captain Awkward. I’m more likely to buy a ticket and flake on the show than actually show up. It took me a beer and a half to screw up the courage to talk to Mishka. I gave him a copy of my shitty book and $20 for gas money. He practically begged me to take a tee shirt. My point: Mishka is a genuine dude. You can read anything he’s ever written and see the truth bleeding out. Yeah. 10 stars.
