Bengali, also known as Bangla, is the official language of Bangladesh and the second most spoken language in India, primarily spoken in the Indian state of West Bengal. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family and has a rich literary and cultural heritage dating back to the first millennium CE. The language evolved from the ancient Sanskrit language, with its earliest form, known as Old Bengali, emerging around the 10th century. The language has since developed through Middle Bengali to the modern form spoken today. Bengali script, derived from the Brahmi script, is distinctive and recognized for its elegant, rounded letters.
Understanding and using basic Bengali phrases can significantly enhance a tourist's experience. Language is a key to connecting with locals, understanding cultural nuances, and navigating everyday situations. By learning phrases for asking directions, answering questions, and ordering food, tourists can communicate more effectively and respectfully.
