Publisher's summary
“Tells the tales left untold by Stephen Ambrose, whose Band of Brothers was the inspiration for the HBO miniseries…laced with Winters’s soldierly exaltations of pride in his comrades’ bravery.”—Publishers Weekly
In war, great commanders lead soldiers into hell to do the impossible.
They were called Easy Company—but their mission was never easy. Immortalized as the Band of Brothers, they suffered huge casualties while liberating Europe in an unparalleled record of bravery under fire. Dick Winters led them through the Battle of the Bulge, the attack on Foy—where Easy Company reached its breaking point—and finally into Germany, by which time each member had been wounded. Outside Munich, they liberated an SS death camp and captured Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s alpine retreat.
Beyond Band of Brothers is Winters’s memoir, based on his wartime diary, but it also includes his comrades’ untold stories. Only Winters was present from the activation of Easy Company until the war’s end. This is their story, told in his words for the first time.

Leadership is the most challenging of human endeavors. It is often misunderstood. It can bewilder, mystify, and frustrate even the most dedicated practitioners. Leaders at all levels are often forced to use theoretical guesswork to make decisions and lead their troops. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY. There are principles that can be applied and tenets that can be followed. There are skills that can be learned and maneuvers that can be practiced and executed. There are leadership strategies and tactics that have been tested and proven on the battlefield, in business, and in life.

Story
The Battle of the Meuse-Argonne stands as the deadliest clash in American history: More than a million untested American soldiers went up against a better-trained and more experienced German army, costing more than 26,000 deaths and leaving nearly 100,000 wounded. Yet, in 47 days of intense combat, those Americans pushed back the enemy and forced the Germans to surrender, bringing the First World War to an end - a feat the British and the French had not achieved after more than three years of fighting.

On October 24, 1944, more than 200 American soldiers were surrounded by German infantry deep in the Vosges Mountains of Eastern France. First published in 1947, this absorbing narrative draws on Patton's vivid memories of battle and his detailed diaries, from the moment the Third Army exploded onto the Brittany Peninsula to the final Allied casualty report. The year is 1918. German engineers have fortified Montfaucon, a rocky butte in Northern France, with bunkers, tunnels, trenches, and a top-secret observatory capable of directing artillery shells across the battlefield. Following a number of unsuccessful attacks, the French deem Montfaucon impregnable and dub it the Little Gibraltar of the Western Front. Capturing it is a key to success for AEF commander in chief John J. Pershing's 1.2 million troops.

A tale that redefines the ordinary soldier in the Second World War, The Deserters is a breathtaking work of historical reportage, weaving together the lives of forgotten servicemen even as it overturns the assumptions and prejudices of an era. The Deserters reveals that ordinary soldiers viewed "desertion" as a natural part of conflict, as unexpected and inexplicable as bravery. The Deserters moves beyond the false extremes of courage and cowardice to reveal the true experience of the Allied soldier.

Every now and then a work comes along that is so simple and refreshing in its originality that it immediately captures the spirit of American fighting men throughout the ages. Such is this work by Bob Babcock. What makes this work unique is that it is based upon his wartime writing as it occurred, without the softening of time and the refining of modern memory applied to past experience. In it you will find the thinking of a young officer as he struggles to take in all that he is responsible for while experiencing everything himself for the first time.

In November 1965, some 450 men of the First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was chopped to pieces. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. How these men persevered makes a vivid portrait of war at its most inspiring and devastating.

I don’t give 5 stars very often. It would be 10 if I could
An amazing memoir by a man I highly respect and even quite occasionally. This is an incredible brief telling of the the story of the Band of Brothers, from the perspective of Dick Winters, one of its leaders. I’d read it again next week. Just amazing. And great leadership tips as well. Now it’s time to listen to Band of Brothers again. I loved the narration, the brief and simple (but sufficient for this telling) character development. Great book! A new favorite.

Required Listening.
Listen. Learn. Enjoy. While I watch the series annually, I will include any audible book pertaining to these great men as part of my annual repertoire.

A perfect companion to Band of Brothers
As a huge fan of the HBO series, I was excited to learn more about the men of Easy Company. I decided to rewatch the series while listening to this audiobook and it was a perfect companion. Understanding the motivations, relationships and history of each character added depth to my experience. It’s hard not to get emotional about this group of men and what they accomplished.

Finally a good sequel
A great book, if it has any shortcomings it would be its inability to stand on its own. This really needs to be read after you have read Band of Brothers or seen the miniseries. It adds a lot of little details and fills out much. An excellent read you will not be disappointed in.
