Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of the Survivor's Club novels comes "an epic love story" (Publishers Weekly) of intrigue and deception and the promises that can break a heart...

"I will love you all my life and even beyond that." Even at 15, Jeanne, the privileged daughter of a royalist EmigrE, knew what she liked: Englishman Robert Blake, bastard son of a marquess. Yet his questionable birth rendered him forbidden. Forced to part, they were still young enough to believe in tomorrow. But as time passed, that brief ephemeral flirtation at Haddington Hall faded into memory.

Eleven years later in Portugal, during the Peninsular Wars, they meet again, both of them spies, and destined to be working on opposing sides. He is now a captain with the British army. She is the widowed Marquesa das Minas - sometimes going by the name Joana da Fonte. However for only one of them does the flicker of recognition still burn. Amid the fury of war and in the shadow of secrets, passion flares once again. But for Joana and Robert, each entrusted to a dangerous mission that demands deception, falling in love could be the most dangerous risk of all.

One of Ny fave Mary Baloug stories

Espionage, social status and love make this story almost like a movie. The heroine believes her first love died a couple of months after being forced away from him. Because of this lie she was told, by her father, she does not realize the man she has met 11yrs later is the same man she is falling love with - again. Our hero recognizes her when they meet again 11yrs later, but does not say anything. Spy games and war fill the background of this love story.

did Mary Balogh REALLY write this?

It dragged on and on and on. The heroine wasn't likeable at all. I honestly can't believe Mary Balogh wrote this. it's definitely not up to her usual standard.

My least favorite Balogh book

I have listened to about a dozen of the author’s books. This is hands down my least favorite. Had this been my first, it would have been my last. The combative nature of the main characters’ relationship was ridiculous and aggravating. The skill of the narrator was the only reason I slogged through it.

How did author Mary Balogh mean names pronounced?

The primary character had changed her given name when she moved from England to live in Portugal. Wouldn't she have become Juana or Juanita, with a soft J sounding more like wah-nuh or zhah-nuh?
The narrator pronounces it with a hard J sound, as in jacks or Jones.
Would Portuguese people even use that sound for any name beginning with J?
Did this narrator or anyone from Recorded Books ask Mary Balogh what pronunciation she had intended?

Really enjoyed it!

Beyond the Sunrise was unexpected and so enjoyable. It was unconventional for a romance novel, but that made it so engaging. I highly recommend this one!

Lovely, romantic story

The Robert and Jeanne are maddening, but the historical setting is good. This is a love story through and through, and the cast of characters are a wonderful addition, but it is truly about them. Balogh is such a wonderful storyteller.
I read this years ago and so glad I read it again,

Loved the Narrator!

Love Mary Balogh. Found the Heroine Way, Way too Much! Admired the Hero.
The heroine Did grow on me toward the End. Rosalyn Landor outdid herself!

Don't get the negative reviews.

I enjoyed this different type of book from Mary Bqlogh. I honestly think a lot of the negative reviews toward the heroine just don't like assertive female characters. Rosalyn Landor's performance was fabulous as always.

My absolute favorite by Mary B.

This is hands down my favorite of Mary Balogh. Possibly because there is so much more than just the love story and even the love story part is more edgy and explicit than usual. Lots of twists and excitement.

Excellent

This book is not like the normal Mary Balogh story, but it was still awesome.
